Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., is demanding the release of a secret memo outlining President Donald Trump's interpretation of his legal authority to wage war. Kaine, a member of the Armed Services and the Foreign Relations committees, sent a letter Thursday night to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson seeking a seven-page memo the administration has kept under wraps for months.

"The fact that there is a lengthy memo with a more detailed legal justification that has not been shared with Congress, or the American public, is unacceptable," Kaine said in the letter to Tillerson, obtained by NBC News.

It has been standard for U.S. presidents to release their legal arguments behind military strikes dating to the Korean War, according to Protect Democracy, a bipartisan group of lawyers. There have been a few exceptions, including the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983 under President Ronald Reagan.

"I am also concerned that this legal justification may now become precedent for additional executive unilateral military action, including this week's U.S. airstrikes in Syria against pro-Assad forces or even an extremely risky 'bloody nose' strike against North Korea," Kaine wrote.

Tim Kaine is the reason you have Donald Trump's legal rationale for war.

Probably includes war against any media outlet that shows his bald head.

The GOP strategery for second terms is already set in stone, however; it's best to be a War President even if you have to invade the wrong country to do it. Pence is at the Olympics now flipping NK the bird as often as possible, and China is providing an excuse for further US involvement in Afghanistan.

Trump already has the Pentagon planning his War Parade. Buh-lieve me, they'll find a war somewhere, anywhere will do.

Trump's war will dwarf those incidents. And you'll still be spouting false equivalencies and helping trump's agenda.

"Trump's war will dwarf those incidents."

Trump wants a parade, not a war.

This is actually one of Trump's good qualities.

I have two questions ~ brought to you by the numbers 1 nd 2.

Is it written in crayon?

Does it mention anybody named Chicken Little?"

Decade after decade of war without Congressional authorization, and people just now care?

At least Trump is good for something.

"But, but...Yadziti virgins are trapped on a hilltop!!"

Which would have never happened if Bush hadn't invaded Iraq. Now, you aren't outraged that Trump is has a secret memo outlining his legal authority to take us into another unnecessary war. What is wrong with you? Are you crazy or stupid? Both?

We should already be having major demonstrations in all American cities protesting any war Trump wants to start. Our major news media is already failing us again, I guess the profits corporations make in unnecessary wars is more important than preventing war.

If it bleeds it leads. Peace doesn't bleed so it doesn't lead. Conflicts sell copy.

"Decade after decade of war without Congressional authorization, and people just now care?"

Are you trying to say people didn't care when Obama's was President?

Practically every decision he made regarding the military was criticized to death.

" Is the U.S. at war in Libya, putting President Obama in violation of the War Powers Resolution? Or does our mission against Muammar Qaddafi fall short of triggering the statute that requires withdrawal within 60 to 90 days unless Congress approves military action?

I think even you were critical of that decision.

Trump is considering something much, much larger than our efforts in Libya, he's talking about regime change in Iran or N. Korea or possibly both, who knows how deeply crazy he is?

"who knows how deeply crazy he is?"

Pretty sure the whole world knows how crazy Humpy Trumpy is.

Now pass me some more of that beautiful chocolate cake. And where is my Diet Coke? That Manafort is always late!

Off with his head!

Trump's "justification for war" is America's worse nightmare.

If he wasn't such a mental case I'd say this claim of a "secret memo" is just another one of his distractions. But who can afford to take the chance that this nutcase isn't going to snap under the pressure of the Russia investigation and start lashing out blindly at anything that moves.

I don't think it's time to panic yet but too late can come sooner than we think.

And, worst of all, there's not a soul round who can stop it from happening.

If that doesn't send a shiver down your spine then you're not human.

Trump is just making so we as a nation are not taking crap anymore, especially the raw deals, he making it so world knows we are thinking about our nation and our people. Trump is letting the world know we are know longer going to feel bad and go total out helping other nations because we have problems in our nation that needs to be taken care of, too long have we neglected our own people.

CRASSUS

That's nonsense and you know better.

You may not mind a candidate for a strait jacket in charge but the rest of the world is deeply concerned that he's going to blow his cork any day now ~ moreso now that the walls are closing in around him.

On the positive side, he has no allies and no coalition.

On the negative side, he has Larry, Moe and Curley for advisors.

No Twin, he doesn't know better. He only knows what Fox News tells him. Fact. And we have both posted here long enough to know that is true.

People criticize everything about every president. I can easily say nobody cares based on the effectively nonexistent votes to reign in executive war powers and its place in party platforms.

" I can easily say nobody cares based on the effectively nonexistent votes to reign in executive war powers and its place in party platforms."

I suspect that if this lunatic in office now starts another stupid, unnecessary war, destroys another country like Iraq, the American people might learn their lesson because it will leave us diminished, poor and vulnerable. Sort of like USSR. There is no free lunch (war).

" the American people might learn their lesson "

If the "American people" didn't learn anything (and Trump is proof they haven't) about the destructive force of unbridled avarice and greed from the Bush/Cheney administration. I have little faith that's they're trainable.

There are just too many people out there who believe that their own narrow views are worth more than the lives of millions of innocent civilians in some far away land.

That would be people like Crassus. He knows it's wrong but as long as the body parts aren't on his doorstep and the screams of a child's agony don't reach his ears, there's little to concern him.

I'd say it's a bit sociopathic and there's a ton of them out there.

Hate to say it Twin but we both know you're right. Wish it weren't so but this nation is mentally ill. It's nice to read a post where the pain of children is acknowledged in regards to our irresponsible use of military force.
