Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Bari Weiss, New York Times: Imagine this: The author of the most popular book in the country goes on Bill Maher's show and says the following about President Barack Obama: "There is something in the book that I was absolutely sure of but it was so incendiary that I just didn't have the ultimate proof," he says. "I didn't have the blue dress." The host pushes the coy writer for a hint. "You just have to read between the lines toward the end of the book," the writer answers. "When you hit that paragraph you're going to say, 'Bingo!'" Within moments, every person with a copy turns to the last bit. The woman's name jumps out as if it was printed in boldface: Samantha Power, the United Nations ambassador. "The president has been spending a notable amount of private time," the book says, with her on Air Force One. Do I have to tell you what the reaction to this rumor-mongering would be?

In the Trump era, the left has smartly and justifiably seized a moral high ground that the right has abandoned by its embrace of the president. That's a high ground the left cannot hold if it embraces subtle double standards that it would never accept for a moment if the woman in question was a Kirsten Gillibrand or a Kamala Harris.

A couple of things. What struck me was that this piece was published in the New York Times. What also struck me was how this writer absolutely nailed this story.

I did notice on a different thread that Danni, and to a lesser extent Rcade, called out Micheal Wolff for his disgusting, tabloid-trash nonsense.

Imagine President Obama commenting negatively on the looks of a female journalist (Megyn), a female primary presidential candidate (Carly) or the wife of another presidential candidate (Ted's wife). Imagine Obama citing a story in the National Inquirer to diss a primary opponent (Ted's father & Oswald). Oh, yeah, you can't.

It's ok to smear a woman if she has an 'R' after her name.

Otherwise, it's misogyny!

Michelle Obama's motto was: When they go low, we go high.

Trump's motto is: How low can I go to?

If Americans are no longer shocked and outraged by the coarsening of our debate and the shamelessness of rumor mongers, Trump has no one to blame but himself. Remember his snide comments about Mika's face lift and his tweeting about Joe and Mika's relationship:

Donald Trump just went Page Six on Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski

Donald Trump escalated his feud with the hosts of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Monday, repeating a rumor straight off Page Six that Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are romantically involved.

Some day, when things calm down, I'll tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. Two clowns!
-- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 22, 2016

It is also no surprise that Trump would engage in Page Six gossip (which has circulated elsewhere, too), given that his list of go-to news sources includes the National Enquirer, Infowars and World Net Daily.

As for Haley, sure she deserves better, and she should have had more self-respect than to take such a high profile position in a Trump administration. She didn't and as Bored says, "She knew what she signed up for."

I don't think most people actually believe the story (I don't) and just see it as more Trump-related reality TV, which could be another reason you don't see as much outrage as you would like.

Jeff, Haley works for a man who gleefully degrades women at every turn. Has she ever once called him out on it? Maybe she has and I missed it. If she has, kudos to her. And if she has, then I will rethink my critique of her situation.

Trump's likely banging more than one woman not his wife. It's his established lifestyle. Money-hungry porn stars or power-hungry apparatchiks, you can't tell me it matters to him.

Jeff, Haley works for a man who gleefully degrades women at every turn. Has she ever once called him out on it?

Yes, she has.

Here:

In an administration where White House officials regularly employ rhetorical jiujitsu to defend the president, Nikki Haley's blunt response to a question about Donald Trump's conduct toward women was an extraordinary rebuke. "Women who accuse anyone should be heard," the United Nations ambassador told CBS's John Dickerson Sunday on Face the Nation, referring to the multiple women who have accused the president of sexual harassment or assault. "And I think we heard from them prior to the election. And I think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up." Trump, who has claimed that all of his accusers are lying, was reportedly infuriated.

I will also point out that 2 wrongs don't make a right. That Haley works for Trump shouldn't mean that she is open game to any and all comments directed at her, no matter how vile, nasty or false they are.

#15 | Posted by JeffJ at 2018-01-30 11:42 AM | Reply

Haley did say that Trump's accusers should be heard. Good for her:

President Trump was infuriated by U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley's comments Sunday that women alleging sexual misconduct -- including Trump's accusers -- should be heard and dealt with, according to a report.

"I know that he was elected, but women should always feel comfortable coming forward. We should all be willing to listen to them," Haley told CBS Sunday, specifically referring to Trump and the accusations of sexual harassment and assault leveled at him during the 2016 presidential campaign.

GOP members of that committee are claiming the Dem memo should follow the same process the GOP memo followed:

1st - be released to every member of the House.
2nd - be voted on to be released to the public.
3rd - If #2 results in a positive vote, be sent to the WH for a 5-day viewing period where the Executive branch makes the final decision whether or not to release it to the public.

The Nunes memo is in the 3rd stage. From what I've read today, nobody in the GOP has even seen the Schiff counter-memo.

I wouldn't have a problem with the allegation if it was credibly sourced and the journalist was standing behind the story. A president having an affair with a Cabinet official would be news.

But this isn't sourced at all. Wolff didn't make this claim in his book. Instead, he made the insinuation in interviews while at the same time he was admitting he lacked adequate sourcing.

Whether the target is a Republican or a Democrat, reporters should not report salacious things about a politician's personal life without pretty strong sourcing. And they obviously shouldn't spread lurid claims while admitting a lack of sourcing. That's sleazy as all get out.

Even though there is no evidence that Nimrata Randhawa is getting boinked by the Dotard, there are three things in favor of the rumor.

1. Her slavish regurgitating of the Dotard's verbal diarrhea is not normal. It goes beyond blind loyalty.

2. Dotard has a thing for thin ugly women (see daughter).

3. Randhawa is Sikh. Polyandry is part of the Sikh religion and still practiced in North India (look it up).
