Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

LG Electronics Inc. 066570 -6.39% has told retailers it plans to raise prices on its laundry appliances following President Donald Trump's approval this week of steep tariffs on imported washing machines. "As a result of the trade situation, we will be initiating pricing actions, which will be sent under separate cover shortly," Thomas Yoon, an executive at the South Korean manufacturer, told retailers in a memo dated Wednesday and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Industry experts say they expect LG will raise published retail prices on at least some of its washer and dryer models by approximately $50. Washers and dryers are often sold in pairs.

LG's planned price increase is an early sign of the downstream consequence of such protectionist measures. It wasn't immediately clear whether LG's competitors will follow suit and raise prices, as analysts expect. Free-trade proponents have argued tariffs will lead to higher prices for consumers and prompt retaliatory actions by other countries that make it harder for American companies to sell their products abroad. Supporters of trade barriers say they will protect domestic industries from harmful overseas competition.

Phil Hannon, vice president at Abt Electronics, an appliance retailer in Glenview, Ill., received the memo and said it wasn't clear whether prices would rise more or less than $50 or when they would take effect. He expects more details from LG in coming days.

The next washer I buy will be hand operated. None of this throw away crap that they sell now.

I got an LG washer and dryer. They are pretty awesome. The most quiet washer and dryer I have ever owned. Got a great deal on the pair of them.

Sure glad I got them before Trump was elected.

Now, if only I could have put those solar panels on my roof last year.

The only thing wrong with the tariffs is they should have been enacted back in 2000 or perhaps even 1980.

"So much winning."

well, it IS a win for US based companies that compete with LG on this product line.

LG has to add $50 to it's price making them less competitive and more likely folks will just buy an American made washer and dryer.

and you're whining about it, Frankie?

That sure sounds like a loss for consumers.

"LG has to add $50 to it's price"

A $50 loss, to be specific.

"so, what's good for a US company is bad for the US consumer?"

When a person lands a better paying job making washing machines then that person finally is able to buy their first washing machine. Maybe eventually their first house.

You could add 1992 or even 2008. I don't consider it a particulary partisan issue, I just consider it stupid that we haven't dealt with it before. Probably though, if you were to blame a particular President I would say Nixon started the ball rolling with his historic visit to China and I'm not saying what he did in that regard was wrong at all, it certainly started the end of the Cold War. I much prefer our relationship with China today over what it was before his visit there.

That economic theory has been espoused many times here...and snoofy has gobbled it up.

but now, just to be an idiot on purpose, snoofy has chosen to take the other side of the issue and complain about a $50 price increase on a washer and dryer.

LOL

I have been consistent in my belief that we need to protect our manufacturing industries for years and even when it is pushed by Trump. Back during the Republican debates I knew he was going to get the nomination when he said he was in favor of tariffs. I didn't expect him to win the election though but for people in those rust belt states it was the message they wanted to hear.

I know huh?

It reminds me of when our friends from the conservative side of life freaked out about a 25 cent increase in hamburgers so we could raise the minimum wage.

#5 but how do the products compare? If people are more likely to buy junk then it's not a win.

Are you consistent in a belief if you've never actually voted for it?

"Are you consistent in a belief if you've never actually voted for it?"

Sorry but Trump was just not qualified nor temperamentally the right type of person to be President, the Democrats proposed several packages designed to bring jobs back to America but the Republicans filibustered all of them. His one attempt to enact tariffs will be fought at the WTO and will then end but we will still be stuck with a lunatic in the WH.

Obama, Clinton, etc, etc. You say you want tariffs, but you never actually vote for them, ever. You might want to drop it as a personal talking point since you will never actually vote for it.

That $50 price tag is only going to affect women because men don't wash clothes.

Whirlpool has won anti-dumping judgements against LG and Samsung several times over the past few years.

In 2012 they won and "The U.S. plans to impose antidumping tariffs for Korean producers LG, Samsung, and Daewoo of 12.15 percent, 9.62 percent, and 79.11 percent, respectively."

This was on products imported from Mexico and South Korea.

To avoid these tariffs LG and Samsung moved production to China.

Whirlpool sued again in 2015.

I could not find an the exact article, but I believe these latest tariffs are a result of the court finding in favor of Whirlpool once again.

It made the news because it was Trump. When Obama did it, it was not news.
