Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, January 14, 2018

Juan Cole: The falsity of the [Hawaii missile] alert was quickly discovered but the same screw-ups who sent it out then sent the retraction to the wrong address so that it did not hit people's cell phones. They finally got the correct information after nearly an hour of panic. But here's the thing. The US military knew all along that there was no such threat. Nobody from the Pentagon tried to reassure the public. And, President Trump was on his West Palm Beach golf course and got the notice that it was a false alarm. He just went on playing golf.

He never tweeted any reassurance to the people of Hawaii. He let them twist in the wind. His apologists are saying it was a state exercise and it is unfair to blame him. But he is president of all the state residents, too, and he had knowledge that could have benefited his co-citizens and did nothing.

a homosexual hairdresser and someone who automatically gravitates to the cowards position of a back shooter...the internet is the place individuals like these get to have their say without the inconvenience presented when your hood needs to be dry cleaned and you still need to find a ride to the rally and it's your turn to bring the charcoal lighter for the cross burning, there's a lot of responsibility that comes with being a bigot. personally I embrace the term "liberal" which i interpret as a license to heap a liberal dose of humiliation and/or whup-ass on trump supporters at every available opportunity.

Trump races to his phone to tweet insults at Rosie O'Donnell and other celebrities but he can't take 20 seconds to tell terrified Hawaiians that the missile alert was a false alarm?

The only people who could defend his inaction are worthless Trump shills.

The whole point of cultivating a following on Twitter is to get information out fast. Trump is so incompetent or uncaring that he didn't send his 46.6 million followers a tweet about this, which could have calmed the panic. Parents are putting their kids in storm drains thinking the end is near and he can't be bothered to help. Instead he's playing yet another round of golf.

IMPEACH THIS DOOFUS ALREADY.

7 wt heck? Hawaii and norad et all knew it was a false alarm. The person responsible seems to have made no attempt to fix the missile warning.

I make the charge that it wasn't a fat finger error, that in fact, it was done intentionally . And left unretracted for 40 minutes.

As yourself, why won't the error be immediately fixed?

How is that a deflection? It's an honest answer. I don't know how the Hawaii civil defense system works. I'm not the political leader of all Americans and their military.
If the warning was real, isn't that even more reason for Trump to be on the media, letting his constituents know what is going on?
This was an American Crisis one way or the other, and he chose to spend his time golfing through it.

Of course, there is also the idea of a leader reacting by reassuring the people that everything is okay.

But that's just not in President IQ45's makeup.

As Philip Bump writes in the Washington Post, where was Trump? Why didn't he at least take to Twitter, his favorite way to communicate, to say that the incident was a false alarm?

"This is not a high hurdle for a president to face. Should a state be informed that a missile is inbound, it seems self-evident that the president should be made aware of this as rapidly as possible -- even if golfing -- and act quickly to confirm or rebut the claim. To then quickly inform the public that the story is not true and insist that a review will be undertaken nationally to prevent such a thing from happening again. Perhaps a photo of the president, stern look on his face, speaking with the governor of Hawaii."

[...] here is the timeline of false alarm events:

TIMELINE OF HAWAII BALLISTIC MISSILE ALERT ERROR
Officials have given the following timeline for the false alert on Saturday.

Approx. 8.05am: A routine internal test during a shift change was initiated. This was a test that involved the Emergency Alert System, the Wireless Emergency Alert, but no warning sirens.

8.07am: A warning was erroneously triggered statewide by an employee at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA).

8.10am: State Adjutant Maj. Gen. Joe Logan validated with the US Pacific Command that there was no missile launch.

Honolulu Police Department notified of the false alarm by HI-EMA.

8.13am: State Warning Point issues a cancellation of the Civil Danger Warning Message. This would have prevented the initial alert from being rebroadcast to phones that may not have received it yet. For instance, if a phone was not on at 8.07am, it would not receive the alert later on.

8.20am: HI-EMA issues public notification of cancellation via their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

8.24am: Governor Ige retweets HI-EMA's cancellation notice.

8.30am: Governor posts cancellation notification to his Facebook page.

8.45am: After getting authorization from FEMA Integral Public Alert and Warning System, HI-EMA issued a 'Civil Emergency Message' remotely, cancelling the false alert.

For anyone who has ever lived on Hawaii, this is lightning fast for people used to "Island Time."

The real issue here is why HI-EMA didn't have a plan in place for a false alarm and why it took the Governor so long to issue notification that it was a false alarm: It took Hawaii's Governor 17 minutes to tweet the cancellation notice, and he lives on Oahu. HI-EMA had to create a false alarm message yesterday since none of the Mokes had thought creating something like this would be necessary in the first place. Norad confirmed within 3 minutes that there was no attack, it still took the State Agency 13 minutes to issue a public notice of cancellation.

Of all the stupid stuff Trump does, this is just petty and idiotic to hyperventilate and overreact to. It detracts from legitimate criticisms and makes his critics look like they're latching on to anything they can like the ones who tried and failed to bring down Clinton, Bush and Obama. As much as I don't want it to happen, I predict this is a large reason he'll be reelected, if it continues.
