Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In Detroit, middle school social studies teacher Rufus McGaugh has completed his goal to visit all the countries in the world. It took McGaugh 49 years to do it, but last May he crossed the finish line when he visited Libya, the 252nd country on his list. (McGaugh counts territories like Greenland and Puerto Rico, so his list is longer than the 193-country membership roll at the United Nations.) ... McGaugh has published a book about his travels called Longitude and Latitude, with Attitude: One Man's Quest to See the Entire World.

"I don't want to brag, but I've stayed in the worst hotel on planet Earth. Nobody's going to beat my story," McGaugh told the Detroit News.

Traveling is interesting, but not a substitute for cultural immersion, which is a trans-formative experience that takes more time than most of us have. It takes two years to learn another language and culture.

A Navy veteran once said there were 3 types of sailors that could be easily identified when docking in a port in a foreign country:

1. Sailors who didn't leave the ship;

2. Sailors who left the ship in search of something - anything - familiar from home: McDonalds, KFC, etc.; and,

3. Sailors who left the ship in order to immerse themselves in the culture and people of the country they were visiting.
