Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, January 13, 2018

A viral video of a recently discharged patient left at a bus stop at night in Baltimore has inspired widespread outrage and prompted an investigation at the hospital where she was treated. The video is distressing to watch -- both for its content and for the questions it raises about the events leading up to it. A young woman, wearing only a hospital gown and socks, is left standing by a bus stop Tuesday night or early Wednesday as four men in uniforms, possibly security guards, walk away. The man who filmed it, Imamu Baraka, follows them as they leave the stop with an empty wheelchair. "Wait, so you all are just going to leave this lady out here with no clothes on?" he says. "That is not okay."

The State didnt put her on the curb. The "for profit" hospital did.

100% chance that if this were a non-profit in a non-Medicaid expansion state, it would all be about the later, obviously.

I am rarely affected by seeing videos of the effects of the cruelty of capitalism, but this one really bothered me.

From seeing many people with Autism, it is obvious that this woman has diminished mental abilities. In most cases, people like this are not even their own legal guardian and certainly can't take care or even speak for themselves. Their legal guardian (the person who cashes their gov't check) should be found and brought to justice. Then go after the system.

There is no mechanism, in our system, where the only concern is making profit, to care for people like this, when they fall between the cracks. Hospitals don't want her, she has no fixable illness. Jails don't take them, because they are not criminals. Other facilities are not available because the guardians will not place them there, because they will lose those sweet, sweet gov't checks that disabled people get.

Lets deal with the actual story.

"If this" has little place in a story of facts.

She was not "allowed" to leave, she was "compelled" to leave. Do you think she should have been wheeled out naked and dumped on the street? Obviously, you are a sociopath to make such a ridiculous statement.

Sorry but you dismissed that this happened in a Medicaid expansion state. That "fact" wasn't good enough....LOL

So facts are selective to you.

You didn't really address the statement in #12, did you?

Unfortunately, similar scenarios happen fairly frequently. When it gets cold out, the frequent flyers are going to show up with anything they can think up looking for a place to stay. While it's hard to blame them trying to survive, when they don't meet the criteria for admission, you have to discharge them. And the same municipalities that will be the first to raise a stink about it are the same one's who refuse to operate shelters for the mentally ill or homeless.

What do you want me to address?

I accept it is a for profit hospital and that's relevant.

But so is the state.

You shouldn't talk about facts when in your first post you lead with an inaccurate statement, "The State didnt put her on the curb. The "for profit" hospital did."

The University of Maryland Medical Center is in fact part of the private, NOT-for-profit, University of Maryland Medical System.

It appears I did accept a falsehood.
