Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the author of the opposition research dossier on then-candidate Donald Trump and Russia was acting on his own volition when he went to the FBI because he was concerned that a presidential candidate was being blackmailed, according to the 312-page transcript of his testimony. Simpson told the committee in closed-door testimony in August -- which was released publicly on Tuesday -- that he did not know how the FBI would react when ex-British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, the author of the dossier, went to the bureau in July 2016.

"Chris said he was very concerned about whether this represented a national security threat and said he wanted to -- he said he thought we were obligated to tell someone in government, in our government about this information," Simpson said.

"He thought from his perspective there was an issue -- a security issue about whether a presidential candidate was being blackmailed."

Simpson also testified that Steele told him the FBI had similar intelligence from "an internal Trump campaign source" and that the FBI "believed Chris' information might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization."

Simpson's testimony was released Tuesday by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who posted the transcript of the August 2017 Senate Judiciary Committee interview that took place behind closed doors.

"The transcript is likely to provide Democrats a counterargument to the Republican charges that the dossier was a political document paid for by Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

"After speaking with majority and minority committee staff for 10 hours, Glenn Simpson requested the transcript of his interview be released publicly. The American people deserve the opportunity to see what he said and judge for themselves," said Feinstein.

"The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation into potential collusion and obstruction of justice. The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public."

"It's political rhetoric to call the dossier 'phony,'" Simpson said. "The memos are field reports of real interviews that Chris's network conducted and there's nothing phony about it. We can argue about what's prudent and what's not, but it's not a fabrication."

Manu Raju‏ @mkraju

Sen. Chris Coons, a Dem member of Judiciary, told me the release of the Fusion GPS transcript shows that the investigation has reached an impasse and that bipartisanship is effectively over in that panel

I fear Trump is being blackmailed, too. It's not like he's led a quiet life.

Releasing this transcript (thank you Dianne Feinstein!) proves that Lindsay Graham and Chuck Grassley flat out lied.
Those two are traitorous scum - trying to destroy an ally and solid friend of America.

How low Graham has sunk.

So a British citizen finds evidence of an ongoing criminal activity related to US national security.

US Senators refer him to the FBI for a criminal investigation.

How will this encourage our allies to help us, provide us with information in the future?

Graham and Grassley's actions will make America less secure!

"What didn't Republicans want you to see in the Fusion GPS transcript?

Sens. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) and Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) made a fateful decision acting unilaterally with a phony "criminal referral" of Christopher Steele, a Brit over whom the United States has no jurisdiction anyway and whom they never saw testify, not just because it made them look like partisan hacks.

They set a new standard that anyone on the committee could act independently and without bipartisan consent of their colleagues. So Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Cal.) did them one better."

"You can understand why the Republicans were furiously trying to suppress the transcript, which contains no classified information.

First, it makes clear that Steele was engaged because of his expertise and contacts. He was not told to find anything in particular, but just to research the totality of Trump's involvement in Russia.

Second, according to Simpson, Trump was doing business all over the former Soviet states of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Interestingly, Trump repeatedly denied having financial ties in Russia itself but never publicly denied operations in states in which Russians exercised substantial influence.

Fifth, Trump lied about not knowing who Felix Sater is. Simpson testified, "This was something he didn't want to talk about and testified under oath he wouldn't know Felix if he ran into him in the street.

That was not true. He knew him well and, in fact, continued to associate with him long after he learned of Felix's organized crime ties. So, you know, that tells you something about somebody."

Sometimes things aren't quite what they seem. Grassley and Graham may be trying to have their cake and eat it too. Making such an obvious ploy at partisan ship by making the criminal referral binds them even closer to their party. However, declaring that any committee member could act independently allowed information to be released that counters republican talking points!

"The British ex-spy who authored a dossier of allegations against then-presidential candidate Donald Trump was told the FBI had someone inside Trump's network providing agents with information, according to a newly released transcript of a congressional interview."

That gonna set Trump's hair on fire.

Yeah, I know. Papadopolous and Flynn. But I'm betting Trump's paranoia won't let it stop there.

I understand patriotism.

The fact that Sneaky Dianne Feinstein, who has on numerous occasions stated that collusion between Trump/Russia has not been found, would release testimony in such an underhanded and possibly illegal way, totally without authorization, is a disgrace. Must have tough Primary!

The single greatest Witch Hunt in American history continues. There was no collusion, everybody including the Dems knows there was no collusion, & yet on and on it goes. Russia & the world is laughing at the stupidity they are witnessing. Republicans should finally take control!

I'm sure Russia appreciates your willingness to surrender the security of our election system for the sake of political expediency.
