Controversial former Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday announced he will run for Senate, the Washington Examiner reported. His candidacy will cast further uncertainty into the state's GOP Senate primary. Arpaio gained popularity among immigration hardliners during his time as Maricopa County sheriff, representing the Phoenix area, proudly calling himself "America's toughest sheriff" and touting a strict approach to border security. But some of his tactics opened him up to criticisms and allegations of racial-profiling and mistreating prisoners. President Trump pardoned Arpaio last year after he was convicted of ignoring a court order related to racial profiling in his division.

The sheriff, who lost his elected sheriff's office last year after more than two decades, has long floated bids for higher office. But he told The Washington Examiner on Tuesday that he will enter the race to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.).

"I have a lot to offer. I'm a big supporter of President Trump," he told the paper.

"I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted. But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win. I'm not here to get my name in the paper, I get that every day, anyway."

Arpaio joins former state Sen. Kelli Ward (R-Ariz.) in the Republican primary.

Ward, who has been endorsed by former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, had been styling herself as the pro-Trump outsider, so Arpaio's entry threatens to cut into her support.

So, it isn't as if he didn't do it, it's just that Trump pardoned his ass.

No dear. By accepting a pardon you are admitting guilt.

That's what I said.

I hope he gets the GOP nomination. Give the voters of Arizona a real choice. Kind of like when they got to choose between Doug Jones and Roy Moore.

Good! Run Joe Run.

He's not in the same class as a Roy Moore but he will suffice.

Looks like the ----- want to lose a Senate seat for Arizona, too!

Should be fun!

You guys are comparing apples to oranges.

Moore is an accused child molester. There was incredibly damaging testimony from women describing him undressing and molesting them when they were underaged girls. And even with that. He barely lost. Matter of fact. If it wasn't for 23,000 republicans writing in Richard Shelby'a name. He may still have won.

Joe Aprario is a pardoned racist. This isn't a big enough factor to deter the people of Arizona from voting for him.

I think it is more like comparing monkey turds to elephant crap.

They both stink but one makes a much bigger steamier pile of crap.

Does any republican see how ludicrous it is to tell us how bad Hillary was as a candidate when their best and brightest are Roy Moore and Joe Arpaio?

Please, Arizona--the US is already getting what it deserves. It doesn't need a second helping of elephant ----...

The county that knew him best voted Joe out as sheriff. We can hope the citizens of the whole state wouldn't vote him in as Senator. It's a safe bet he wouldn't get much of the Hispanic vote and try as they might Rs can't keep all of them from voting.

This was just announced and already the Hispanic population here is AZ is galvanizing and doing everything to make sure he can't get in.
In this Rep state, it's hard to believe that a Dem could get a senate seat though with Flake out (& McCain on the next round), the odds are the Reps will kill each other off (center v far right) allowing a Dem in.

This year should prove to be the Dem's version of 2010 when the Reps came in strong.

Wake up, "pardoned racist" is his campaign slogan. The people who will vote for him know it and like it, they are the same as he is.

I'm having trouble telling if this is facetious or serious.

I hope he wins the Primary. It increases the Dems chances of flipping an AZ seat significantly.

Wait until they start working on privatizing Social Security and Medicare then watch Arizona turn deep blue.
