Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, January 02, 2018

State Rep. Bill Chumley (R-Woodruff) and state Rep. Mike Burns (R-Taylors) pre-filed a bill last month that would establish a commission to design an African-American Confederate veterans monument, reported The State. "In all my years of research, I can say I have seen no documentation of black South Carolina soldiers fighting for the Confederacy," said historian Walter Edgar, the longtime director of the University of South Carolina's Institute for Southern Studies. "In fact, when secession came, the state turned down free (blacks) who wanted to volunteer because they didn't want armed persons of color. Edgar, who wrote a history of the state, said any black person who served in a Confederate unit in South Carolina was either a slave or an unpaid laborer working against his will.

These right-wing dullards are so desperate to perpetuate the lie that the Civil War wasn't about slavery, or that black people actually liked slavery, that they simply make stuff up. And then when called on it, they say, well, gosh, we're all learning here.

I heard a podcast recently about how they made up the idea of the black soldier running in to support slavery. I will find it.

I suggest they do put up such a monument. Show the black confederate soldiers that Frederick Douglass wrote about as they truly were, slaves pressed into service against their will. And show them deserting to join the Union after the first Confiscation Act was became law.

That would be hard to depict in a statue or monument. A mural would work.

Are we sure this isn't a joke, this seems like a troll? Is Dave Chappele involved?

They should put up a monument showing the well deserved slaughter of confederate traitors, with a freed black man pissing down on the corpses.

Gutsy move would be to make the Memorial to those black Confederates who were forced to serve the Confederacy.

Yes, we all realize that less than half of a percent of blacks in the US during the slavery era owned slaves and that the majority of the slaves owned by black freemen were family members who they purchased out of slavery or were children born of mothers who had had been purchased by the free husband but had not been legally emancipated so the children were legally counted as slaves.

Come to think of it why not make memorials memorializing ALL those drafted or otherwise compelled to serve as confederates?

#15 | Posted by Tor at 2018-01-02 12:51 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Read Ron Chernow's "Grant" and one will learn how the Confederates felt about having slaves in their ranks. it was so ridiculously unthinkable that Lee was affronted at the thought of a black man on Grant's staff at Appomattox, when in fact the man was Native American, which Lee found acceptable...

well do we also go after the Blacks that sold their own people into slavery or do we keep all the blame on all whites forever

"please take down those damn POW/MIA flags."

Are you high?

Some of those men were drafted and some may still be alive.

So what if there were black slave owners?
Does that make it okay, if the blacks were doing it?
Is everything the blacks do okay?

What do you mean "their own people?"

Are all people of the same skin color somehow a unified group? Like, sometimes, white men rape their own women, and sometimes they rape black people's women?

Is Hillary Clinton one of your people, because you're both white?

Is Hillary Clinton a race traitor, to your race and to hers?

Are you simply a racist? You sure do sound like one.
