The chief of the Russian General Staff has accused the United States of training former Islamic State fighters in Syria to try to destabilise the country.

General Valery Gerasimov's allegations, made in a newspaper interview, centre on a US military base at Tanf, a strategic Syrian highway border crossing with Iraq in the south of the country.

Russia says the US base is illegal and that it and the area around it have become "a black hole" where militants operate unhindered.

Gerasimov told the daily Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper on Wednesday that the United States was training up fighters who were former Islamic State militants but who now call themselves the New Syrian Army or use other names.

He said Russia satellites and drones had spotted militant brigades at the US base. "They are in reality being trained there," Gerasimov said, saying there were also a large number of militants and former Islamic State fighters at Shadadi, where he said there was also a US base.

"They are practically Islamic State," he said. "But after they are worked with, they change their spots and take on another name. Their task is to destabilise the situation."

Gerasimov said the fact that Moscow was keeping an air base and naval facility there meant it was well placed to deal with pockets of instability if and when they arose.

Great. Bombing threat.

Dotard don't care. Dotard don't give a $*%#

BTW, everyone knows that the US is behind ISIS. They created it and they sustain it. And they "bomb" it just enough to nudge it in the direction they want it to go in.

Now they even have ISIS in Afghanistan.... and guess who was already there since 18 years, spinning their wheels in the Afghan mud....

Create a problem, offer "protection" to get rid of "problem".

This is the US Army. And this is why they can't win any wars any more. People are on to them.

I guess General Gerasimov must have been drunk for the last six years...this has been going on for a while. Or was going on anyways.

For someone who is an American from Texas, you certainly do use the words "they" a lot to describe your home country. I guess it can get confusing when you aren't on a Pakistani board, right?

BTW, everyone knows J Tremain is a filthy liar. Claims to live in Texas but, if he does, I'll bet you dollars to donuts he keeps his anti-American mouth shut because Texans would teach him a thing or two.

Boaz, Tremain couldn't even find Texas on a map, he's never been there, will never go there and if he did manage to get there he'd regret it PDQ. Texans would tolarate his anti-American crap for about 15 seconds.
