AT&T promised $1,000 in bonuses because of the GOP tax plan on Wednesday. But the union representing AT&T workers bargained for that bonus earlier this month. On Wednesday, AT&T's CEO announced $1,000 bonuses for all AT&T employees. AT&T said the bonuses were the result of corporate tax cuts passed in Congress this week. But the big payout was to President Donald Trump's ego. AT&T was already in talks with its union to give holiday bonuses, that union told The Daily Beast. The telecom's GOP-friendly press release makes it the latest company to praise Trump's legislative agenda when they need a big favor from the White House.

The bonuses might buy more goodwill with the Trump administration. AT&T is currently attempting a merger with Time Warner, but faces opposition from Trump's Justice Department. In November, the DOJ filed an antitrust lawsuit to block the merger. The week before the suit, Politico reported that the DOJ had threatened to block the merger if Time Warner did not sell CNN, a news network Trump frequently decries as "fake." After AT&T's Wednesday bonus announcement, Trump praised the telecom giant.

"This just came out ... AT&T plans to increase U.S. capital spending $1 billion and provide $1,000 special bonus to more than 200,000 U.S. employees, and that's because of what we did," Trump said in a Wednesday press conference on the bill's passage in Congress. "That's pretty good. That's pretty good."

AT&T isn't the first company to suck up to Trump for favors.

Like every other economic indicator I know of things were just fine and getting better before DOTUS entered office and likely would have continued on the path we've seen under Hillary.

You could argue the stock market might not be as high, but isn't that just saying the bubble isn't as big and, therefore, the correction would be smaller? Sounds better to me than our current reality.

From the article:

"But in the past month, CWA also pushed AT&T to add bonuses based on the GOP's promises of middle class prosperity under the tax bill."

So CWA pushed, during its collective bargaining, for AT&T to give them bonuses if the tax bill passed, and that is what happened.

Sounds like they are both right, AT&T gave the CWA the promised $1,000 bonus once the tax bill passed.

"So CWA pushed, during its collective bargaining, for AT&T to give them bonuses if the tax bill passed, and that is what happened."

Well, not exactly, of course. Have you ever told the WHOLE truth?

Actually they pushed for the $4000 that Trump and the ----- promised.

"Republicans, including the president, said the average household would get $4,000 under this tax plan," CWA spokesperson Candice Johnson told The Daily Beast. Last month, CWA representatives began contacting AT&T, asking the company to give workers that $4,000 raise.

They took a onetime bonus of $1000 because that is better than a sharp stick in the eye.

We were talking about the bonus, Downerboy, not the raise. If you read the article, they just signed the new CWA last week, I guarantee you that included raises that were part of that particular discussion given the timing. The bonus is separate from the raise, and is covered in the quote I posted.

@#5 ... So CWA pushed, during its collective bargaining, for AT&T to give them bonuses if the tax bill passed...

So AT&T had to be pushed into doing it, dragged into doing it kicking and screaming?

That's not the rosy scenario that Pres Trump painted, a scenario in which corporations of the United States would shower the spoils of the tax cut upon the workers.

Your butthurt shows that you have no conception on how collective bargaining works.

@#11 ... Your butthurt shows that you have no conception on how collective bargaining works. ...

My butt is fine. Thanks for caring.

I have a very good understanding of how collective bargaining works.

At one point in my career, I was a front-line manager in a heavy-machinery union shop for a Fortune 100 corporation. But that's besides the point.

It was you who said the union had to push for it, not I.

Pres Trump stated that the corporations would just pass the money on to the workers. Pres Trump said nothing about the workers having to push the corporations in order to get the money.

So it seems you're really saying that Pres Trump doesn't have a clue.

Maybe we agree after all. ;)

And the workers wanted the raise, but the company gave them the bonus instead.

Go figure, huh, ROC?

No YOU are talking about the bonus as if AT&T gave the bonus out of the goodness of their hearts. WE are talking about what really happened.

And so now you know the rest of the story.

No, the CWA wanted raises, and ATT gave them bonuses instead.

I wonder why.

Any theories, ROC?
