Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The City Council [in Memphis] voted Wednesday to sell two city parks with Confederate monuments, clearing the way for two statues to be removed before the city commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ... Health Sciences Park had a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general and an early member of the Ku Klux Klan, which was removed around 9 p.m. local time. By 10:30 p.m., cranes had maneuvered into Memphis Park and around a statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. About 15 minutes later, a crane hoisted the statue onto a truck as a crowd cheered and struck up songs, including "Hit the road Jack."

Who would object to taking down statues of traitors?

Other traitors.

While we're at it, West Virginia needs to remove Robert Byrd's name from all the stuff named after him and his wife.

I have got NO skin in this game, as ALL of my relatives came to the United States after the Civil War. They were obviously the Boat People of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century!

They are taking away our history!

Now how will we know who the traitors were that lost the Civil War?

@#5 They are taking away our history!

If only the statues were really about history.

But they were not.

They were about intimidation and racism.

That statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest in Nashville will remain--its on private land...

Why not revise history, in fact, why not delete the Civil War from the history books?

Removing Confederate monuments from public property, especially those erected during Jim Crow days through the 1960s (to show black Americans their real "place") is hardly "revising" history.

Your side has already done that.

I was opposed to their removal until I learned about that historical tidbit.

It's become embarrassing to have statues around reminding us that Democrats fought for slavery.

"It's become embarrassing to have statues around reminding us that Democrats fought for slavery."

Maintaining slavery is (was?) a conservative position.

There were traitors who held the rank of general during the revolutionary war besides Benedick Arnold. Yet they still have monuments to them. I draw a line about the confederate monuments. The ones erected by city and state governments in the 50s and 60s are usually dedicated to individuals, some general usually,I say move them to one of the many cemeteries where the soldiers who did for that cause are buried. They led them there. The ones that should remain are the ones that were erected by the vets as a memorial to their comrades, within living memory of that conflict. Those who generally were dumped into mass graves unidentified. They are the only grave markers thousands have.

Damn, you Russians are good! Your selective, misinterpretation and misreading view of history that twists the truth and ignores most of the mid-to-late 20th century, as well as the "southern strategy" is an excellent play Comrade.

#12 It is embarrassing that the democrats were scum in the past, it is more embarrassing that the republicans are scum now.

Translation - i took the conservative side by default until i learned liberals knew more than they did. As always.

And just how do African-Americans feel about this?

In 2012 Americans went to the polls to re-elect President Obama (only the 4th president since the First World War to be elected and then re-elected with a majority of the votes cast).

In that election:

93% of African-American voters voted for the Democratic candidate

I suggest you try to live in the now. Otherwise, well, you just come across as stupid.

Might as well.

I mean the right has already revised slavery to be "migrant workers". And who would fight a war over migrant workers?
