Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The American people voted for populism. They got plutocracy. According to a poll from Public Policy Polling, 57 percent of Americans now approve of the Affordable Care Act. Only 29 percent approve of the GOP's tax cuts.

Reflect on those numbers for a moment. Republicans have managed to make tax cuts less popular than Obamacare.

It's impressive. And yet last week, given an opportunity to tweak their bill before final passage, to make it something the American people might like a little better, the main change Republicans made was to lower the top tax rate -- the rate paid by the richest Americans -- even more.

There is something wrong with a political system where the presidency is won on a populist message and the resulting policy is pure plutocracy, where #DrainTheSwamp becomes tax breaks for hedge funds, the well-connected, and the president's family.

‘Corker Kickback' sends Republicans scrambling in advance of tax vote

Corker made his announcement [to vote yes on the bill] two hours before the text of the tax bill was made public. In the 503-page text was a new provision that was not in the House or Senate legislation. It would specifically benefit real estate investors who operate "pass-through" businesses. This group includes President Trump -- and also Bob Corker, who "has millions of dollars of ownership stakes in real-estate related LLCs that could also benefit" from the new provision.

The savings to Corker could be substantial, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

The GOP is out to help themselves and their donors, not everyday Americans. #taxscam

Rep. Joe Kennedy III‏ @RepJoeKennedy

A week from today, hours after delivering a massive, unfunded handout to corporations sitting on $2.3 trillion in cash, GOP might shut down the government because providing care for low-income kids would bankrupt us.

John Dean‏ @JohnWDean

If this reporting is correct it reeks of bribery to get Corker's vote while giving even more tax breaks to Trump. This is about as conspicuous as corruption can get. The GOP and Trump are shameless. Their base is too stupid to stop them!

Considering that President Trump defeated Sec. Clinton by carrying only 26% of the eligible voters, 29% approval just might be winning -- math and reality.

And still you pretend that Interstate Crosscheck wasn't the method that got Trump in the WH. He didn't win any election, the GOP cheated him into office.

Dear America;...you do realize that almost everywhere else on the planet, when there is new budgets or tax reforms passed, it is to decrease the deficit...not increase it by 13 digits....just sayin !

Most economists say that when you have a strong economy, as we do now, we should raise taxes and pay down debt so that when we have a weak economy we can borrow to restart our economy. Greedy Republicans know this as well as anyone else, they just don't care. Their motto today is "steal as much as we can as fast as we can because our time is about over." Anyone who isn't, at least, a millionaire is stupid to support this garbage.

The Trump tax scam takes care of the only Americans that matter to the GOP... the top 1%.

That's it.
