Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The United Nations monitor on poverty and human rights has issued a devastating report on the condition of America, accusing Donald Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress of attempting to turn the country into the "world champion of extreme inequality." Philip Alston, the UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, has completed a two-week official tour of the US by releasing an excoriating attack on the direction of the nation. Not only does he warn that the tax bill currently being rushed through Congress will hugely increase already large disparities between rich and poor, he accuses Trump and his party of consciously distorting the shape of American society in a "bid to become the most unequal society in the world."

"American exceptionalism was a constant theme in my conversations," he writes. "But instead of realizing its founders' admirable commitments, today's United States has proved itself to be exceptional in far more problematic ways that are shockingly at odds with its immense wealth and its founding commitment to human rights. As a result, contrasts between private wealth and public squalor abound."

In his most stark message, Alston warns that the Republicans' declared intent to slash crucial welfare programs next year in order to pay for some of the $1.5 trillion tax cuts could cost American lives. "The consequences for an already overstretched and inadequate system of social protection are likely to be fatal for many programs, and possibly also for those who rely upon them," he writes.

Trump didn't do this, Trump jumped on the band wagon Putin created. The oligarchs in Russia have become the heroes of the uber rich in America, they are emulating them, they want to be them. I've seen this coming for a long time, our billionaires became jealous of their billionaires and the way they could so easily ignore the poverty of the Russian people while living in splendor. Ronald Reagan beat Jimmy Carter in the election of 1980 by convincing the Ayatollah of Iran to hold Americans hostage until after the election, all the billionaires know that. They have always known that. Jimmy Carter said, on the Thom Hartmann radio show about a year ago, that America is no longer a democracy but it is now an oligarchy. Now Agit Pai tries to end net neutrality? Do y'all see where this is heading or are you stupid?

America hasn't ever been a democracy. It was originally designed to be a white male Oligarchy where women and blacks could not vote and who had restricted property rights. It has been waving the flag of democracy for longer than our lifetimes but it remains an Oligarchy.

Trump doesn't do much of anything except watch TV and play golf. He certainly didn't write the tax bill, although he is selling it. The rise of Putin has a lot to do with US coaching and consulting provided to Russia after Gorbachev took the Berlin Wall down. This advise backfired on Yeltsin who resigned in tearful disgrace and appointed Putin.

Trump depends on Russia for financing his deals, much of it dirty money. But the notion that Putin created or had any role in income disparity in the United States is laughable. Trump is hell bent on increasing income disparity, but so were his predecessors, since its been growing for nearly forty years.

• The net worth of the average black household in the United States is $6,314, compared with $110,500 for the average white household, according to 2011 census data. The gap has worsened in the last decade, and the United States now has a greater wealth gap by race than South Africa did during apartheid. (Whites in America on average own almost 18 times as much as blacks; in South Africa in 1970, the ratio was about 15 times.) www.nytimes.com

Snoofy, you remind me of a conversation my mentor and I had 30 years ago:

Do you want to be a scientist, or a politician, Richard?

"A scientist", I replied.

Then, stop crawling upon your belly like a lawyer.

Yup we are quickly becoming a 3rd world nation.

remember every $ spent on a poor person is a $ that could of gone to a rich person at least that is what our politicians think and so does the ruling class who pays our politicians

Oh Jesus Christ. They give a Liberal an agenda who doesn't do any scientific methods but has "findings" and people take this as credible? Shame on any of you who believe this crap. America has problems like every other country but inequality isn't one of them, in terms of proportion. Don't let an entitled white guy who already had bias going into the research sway your emotion just because the media prints it. Unfortunately, that's what most of you do and then blame everyone else for our problems.
