Discomfort with the term "evangelical" began in some quarters with the Moral Majority in the Reagan years, which helped make "evangelical" synonymous with the Republican Party. Ever since, evangelicals have disagreed with each other about mixing faith and politics. Such debates intensified last year when President Trump was elected with the overwhelming support of white evangelical voters after a vitriolic campaign that alienated many Americans. Most recently, after Senate candidate Roy Moore drew strong majorities of white evangelicals in Alabama despite reports of his pursuit of teenage girls when he was in his 30s, some Christians across the country said they weren't sure they wanted to be associated with the word anymore.

Even two of the grandchildren of Billy Graham, the famed evangelist who helped popularize the term, are abandoning the word. "The term has come to represent white Republicans and ... sometimes close-mindedness and superiority," said granddaughter Jerushah Armfield, a writer and pastor's wife in South Carolina.

Jen Hatmaker, a Texas-based author with a large evangelical following, sees "a mass exodus" from the label in her community. "The term feels irreversibly tainted, and those of us who don't align with the currently understood description are distancing ourselves to preserve our consciences," she said.

At Princeton University, a campus group changed its decades-old name this year from "Princeton Evangelical Fellowship" to simply "Princeton Christian Fellowship."

Trump and Moore, seriously damaged evangelical label

Good

Less religion is always best, especially in the public square.

If the GOP ever hopes to ever get my vote again, they need to reject the evangelical hypocrites that they've embraced since the end of the 1970s.

I find it hilarious that the evangelicals are now apoplectic over their integrity being in tatters after the pedophiles loss. Like they had any left after supporting a twice divorced serial liar sexual assaulter. But then again the evangelicals were never real christians anyways.

Evangelicals gave up all of their credibility in 1980 when they voted for Reagan. In Florida today they are going to create a personalized license plate featuring Ronald Reagan because the right wing liars are determined to idolize that evil liar who blew up the national debt. Evangelical is a synonym for ignorant idiot.

"If the GOP ever hopes to ever get my vote again, they need to reject the evangelical hypocrites that they've embraced since the end of the 1970s."

With an electoral college advantage and without a popular vote advantage...the GOP would be dead without the evangelical vote.

"Evangelicals gave up all of their credibility in 1980 when they voted for Reagan"

So what? nobody cares about their credibility. just their votes and $$...that's it. nothing else required. They can leave their credibility at home.

You focus on the weirdest, and quite frankly the most irrelevant things, Danni.

The evangelical label was already damaged for everybody but those that identified as evangelical. It took two politicians as despicable as trump and moore for them to realize they are hypocrites.

If the lavish lifestyle and 5000 dollar suits didn't discourage their brand, this isn't going to matter much, especially to those who donate money.

Religion has perverted (pun intended) it's message long ago.

Few things would be better for the soul of America than the demise of Political White Conservative Christian Evangelism.

These people are as big a cancer as the Black and Brown city gangs.

"There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites."

You sound dissappointed. YOu should be celebrating. Without these religious hypocrites, repubs would lose far more elections.

Disillusioned with society mostly.

Large chunks of the world, even the developed world, are still fantasizing about living in the sky with an invisible man for the rest of eternity as long as they do what their religion tells them.

Political affiliation aside, these are people who've been fed BS all of their lives and are getting taken advantage of.

It's wierd to focus on the President who put us on a trend to multiply the national debt many times? Who took us away from a tax structure which paid off the debt after WWII and which could do the same today but instead just started our greed focused economy? You're the one who is weird because you try so hard to remain moderate in a world that is so skewed that "moderate" is actually now a synonym for right wing lunatic.

Evangelicals seriously damaged their own brand.

Trump and Moore are merely symptoms of their rot.
