Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, December 12, 2017

President Trump aggressively returned to the issue of sexual harassment on Tuesday, again dismissing his own accusers as fabricators and attacking a female Democratic senator as a "lightweight" who "would do anything" for campaign contributions. The president's attacks came in early morning Twitter posts after three of the accusers had come forward on Monday to renew their charges from last year that Mr. Trump had sexually assaulted them before he entered politics, and after the senator, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, had called for him to resign. While Mr. Trump weathered the accusations during his presidential campaign, the flood of recent allegations against powerful men has revived the issue of sexual harassment with a newfound fury.

Gillibrand was quick to fire back, saying she would not be silenced by a president whose comments she described as "a sexist smear."

"It was a sexist smear attempting to silence my voice, and I will not be silenced on this issue," she said. "Neither will the women who stood up to the president yesterday," she added.

"Ms. Gillibrand first learned of the president's Twitter post while she was attending a bipartisan Bible study on Tuesday morning, one of her aides said. The aide also said that Ms. Gillibrand had met with Mr. Trump just once in his office, several years ago, and that his daughter Ivanka was at the meeting.

Senator Mike Rounds, Republican of South Dakota who said he was with Ms. Gillibrand at Bible study when the tweet was sent, said, "I think this is simply one of those cases where it is best if we look at what the president does and not pay attention to the tweets.

@realDonaldTrump
Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don't know and/or have never met. FAKE NEWS!

Like most politicians, Gillibrand is a political opportunist. Far from being upset by Trump's tweet, I bet she is secretly pleased that he is helping her raise her brand, something she needs after the pounding she's been getting for throwing Franken under the bus without an investigation.

The Democratic pivot on sexual harassment is calculated politics at its most effective

Like it or not, this how a competent political party performs.

Trump is on tape bragging of sexual harassment and assault and now sexually harassed a US Senator yet his supporters will still defend him on this issue.

One of the reasons Gillibrand said Franken should resign was so that she could call out Trump and not have anyone ask, "What about Franken?"

I'm Not Convinced Franken Should Quit

More allegations could come out against Franken that would cause me to change my mind, but right now I agree with this assessment. What makes this op ed even more interesting to me is that Teachout ran for Congress last fall in part of what constituted Gillibrand's old Congressional seat. (The seat has since be changed through gerrymandering, so it doesn't cover the exact same area.)

Minnesotans demand an investigation into all sides of this including why Roger Stone got a heads up. Franken is our senator and he deserves a hearing.

Thanks for all the great comments, tweets, and responses to this article. Much to my (delighted!) surprise, the overwhelming response was that Franken should stay--for now--and go through real investigation. Time/process is worth a lot.

Franken should rescind his statement about resignation, remain in the SEnate, as the thorn who still hurts Trump and his AG. We need him on that wall!

Anyone can get it that he was insulting her character without being specific. If he has an actual accusation to make he should do so, otherwise, inuendo like that is completely unethical and potentially even justification for liable suit. That anyone defends such comments just indicates the morality of that poster.

I'm sorry but Franken needs to go. We can't take the moral high ground if we keep him. He would be a stick the Republicans could continue to beat us with.

And don't worry. Minnesota has a few really really good people to replace him with that have strong name recognition throughout the state like Lori Swanson. She isn't known outside of Minnesota but in Minnesota, she has huge name recognition.

#28 | Posted by Sycophant at 2017-12-13 02:33 PM | Reply

I just wonder if Gillibrand et al would have been so gunho to get rid of Franken if there hadn't been a Democratic governor to replace him. I didn't see them rushing to force Menendez out of office when he was indicted. All people were asking for was a fair ethics hearing for Franken. That doesn't seem like too much to ask. I'm very disappointed in Kristen's performance these past few weeks.
