Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Pentagon is allowing transgender people to enlist in the military beginning Jan. 1, despite President Donald Trump's opposition. The new policy reflects growing legal pressure on the issue, and the difficult hurdles the federal government would have to cross to enforce Trump's demand to ban transgender individuals from the military. Two federal courts already have ruled against the ban. Potential transgender recruits will have to overcome a lengthy and strict set of physical, medical and mental conditions that make it possible, though difficult, for them to join the armed services. The requirements make it challenging for a transgender recruit to pass. But they mirror concerns President Barack Obama's administration laid out when the Pentagon initially lifted its ban on transgender service last year.

The Pentagon has similar restrictions for recruits with a variety of medical or mental conditions, such as bipolar disorder.

"Due to the complexity of this new medical standard, trained medical officers will perform a medical prescreen of transgender applicants for military service who otherwise meet all applicable applicant standards," Eastburn said.

Transgenders can enlist, but any history of ADD diagnosis w/ prescribed medication is disqual.

Must look at the bright side -- at least they cannot chose to get pregnant to be rotated out of a war zone ;)

Why not? There ARE female to male transgenders.

Why in the hell would a transsexual WANT to enlist? Navy, absolutely no privacy on a ship or boat. Army, expect 3 months in the field- every year, and you are lucky to have a tent to sleep in. Forget niceties like showers, or filling a script. Marines? About like the Army- except the other Marines are crazy with blood lust and so testosterone rich the females act like men. Maybe the Air Force, as long as there are some real warriors to protect them. They do not call it the service for nothing.

"Patriotism combined with bravery."

When you examine the war history of America since the 1960's that is a questionable answer. More like a job, perhaps educational benefits, psychopathy.

That is laid at the feet of politicians.

Not at the feet of men and women who volunteer to serve their country through military service.

"Not at the feet of men and women who volunteer to serve their country through military service."

The word "volunteer" is all telling. Bring back the citizens army, though the draft. As long as only volunteers are sent to fight our wars we will have more and longer unnecessary wars fought by people who do so for their own reasons which I just don't really believe is patriotism. It's patriotic to defend your country, it is not patriotic to invade and occupy a country that has never attacked us. We need to eliminate that fallacy once and for all.

I could not agree with you more, Danni.

"...it is not patriotic to invade and occupy a country that has never attacked us."

Again, that's laid squarely at the feet of politicians.

We have civilian control over the military (which we MUST have).

Everyone should fear a US military that defies that.

Why would ANYONE want to enlist?

Go have your morality tortured out of you so you can become a mercenary for bankers and corporations to secure their profits?

You must be really dumb to have all that flag waving trick you into thinking you're a patriotic hero who's protecting americans..

You implied it was because they could get gender reassignment paid for by the military.

Many people decide to serve in the military for many many reasons. Benefits are surely one of them.

The medical costs (benefit) of transgender treatments are 10 - 20 times LESS than the medical costs (benefit) for making your ----- last for 4 hours.

I didn't imply anything. I answered the question pretty specifically.
Funny how when you compare a tiny number to a huge number it gives a pretty distorted view of the situation.
There are
1.2 - 1.4 million active duty members of the military.
85.5% of which are men. 85.5% of 1.3 million = 1.11million men
There are an estimated midrange figures of 2,450 transgender people in active duty
Back of the napkin math means that there are over 400 times as many men as transgender. The healthcare cost for those transgender to the military is 20 - 40 times higher per person than is being spent on those specific doctor proscribed medicines.

Your assumptions are way off. While every transgender needs hormones, not every male needs Viagra.

In addition, the $700/year is peanuts compared to the $75,000 it costs to train a recruit.

Trump's ban was about pleasing bigots, not saving money. If he cared about the spending, he wouldn't be taking all the trips to his resorts, or blowing up the budget with tax cuts for the rich.

#28 | Posted by GOnoles92 Actually this is nothing new, if you are old enough, you can remember minor offenders were offered the option of enlisting rather than going to jail back in the 60s. We get gang-bangers some times, we usually put them in close contact with rivals, Crips with Bloods, Folk with Latin Kings, what ever, to the point they have to cooperate or fail. These guys are refugees. They are happy to be off the street. I have seen these guys required to hold hands for a week, every minute of the day.
I haven't known any transsexuals personally, but how many pills a day does it take for maintenance? The Army busts people out of the service for being over weight. They separate people who develop any chronic condition, like diabetes. So why in the hell should the Services be required to accept people who require so much support?

I think it would be more important to go back to funding wars the way it was done in WWII...with war bonds. It's easy for politicians to go to war when they can simply borrow the money from a traditional lender. But when the people are obligated to pay for the war, you can get a real sense of whether or not the people stand behind that war.

I don't think the draft would be a practical option for a technologically-advanced military. Conscripts typically served 1-2 years. Depending on career field, a service member could spend more time than that on training alone.
