Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has been jailed for life for genocide and other atrocities in the 1990s Bosnian war. Known as the "Butcher of Bosnia", Mladic led forces during the massacre of Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) in Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo. The UN tribunal in The Hague convicted him on 10 of the 11 charges. Mladic, 74, was not in court when the sentence was read out. He had been removed for shouting at the judges. "It's a lie. Everything you said in this courtroom is a lie," he said.

The outburst came after the judges rejected a request by his team to halt the proceedings because of Mladic's high blood pressure.

Mladic has denied all the charges and his lawyer said he would appeal.

Good ol hate.

Where is the usual crew to say that hate is harmless and should be ignored? That it's a wonderful healthy form of free speech to be treasured and protected?

#2 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Hitler wrote the 1st Amendment.

#4 I'm pretty sure you don't understand why the ACLU defends even offensive speech. Because your brain stops there.

Who cares?

#6 That's exactly the attitude that let's dictators take control and torture and kill people. Right there. You nailed it, good job.

The ACLU defends these despicable people because it is their constitutional right. The problem is that same kind of speech is what resulted in the genocide here and elsewhere. People that were neighbors and friends killing one another. It was tried elsewhere in Eastern Europe around the same time as well but didn't take root like it did in the former Yugoslavia area. Another example is Romania post Ceaușescu - The June 1990 Mineriad. It was a direct result of hate speech.

While hate speech is a right it should NOT be tolerated.

Are you aware that you posted an article about genocide? driven by hate?

I guess you're one to think Americans are special little angels who are not like normal humans, so this could never happen here?

Helium doesn't "tolerate" hate. He takes joy in it. He sees it as a wonderful expression of freedom. He can post about the slaughter of people due to hate and still love the hate.

Helium - can you help me understand this? On the surface it's an awful position to take.

I just don't understand you people. The Enlightenment would not have have happened if Martin Luther could not post his 95 Thesis on a church door. That was hate speech, at the time.

Anything you do to oppose tyranny can be called hate speech.

What if the SJW's passed a constitutional amendment banning hate speech, and your criticisms of Trump where outlawed?

CAN YOU EVEN GOD-DAMN THINK FOR YOURSELVES?

That's democracy for ya!

Truth would be exempted, of course.

Sigh. It's pointless. Freedom is doomed. Total thought control is the only way to end hate, like in fundamentalist societies.

But hey, maybe you should read my Gandhi thread on the back page. Go ahead, you might learn something. It has "philosophy" in it. I promise it won't hurt.

It wasn't "hate speech" it was blasphemy in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church and much of the royalty of the time and that is a big difference. It was a different point of view on Christianity and in particular on indulgences even though he claimed it was in line with the Pope's. Don't get me wrong a one sentence explanation isn't going to cover them but boiling it down he was saying Indulgences were wrong and carried no value on "judgement day".

Personally I struggle to find true hate speech with positive value as you tried to layout. Any speech vilifying a group of people as a whole in particular has no redeeming value at any time.

#18 Blasphemy isn't hate speech? Are you out of your mind? So if I say that Mohammad was a pedophile who believed in African slavery and advocated killing Jews and gays and oppressing women, you put that in a different category than hate speech because it's "just" blasphemy?

Who, exactly, is going to draw the lines here? No, all speech should should free unless you make a non-cartoon death threat or a serious false false alarm.

Here's a better example that may hit closer to home: Joshua 6:17, 21 and Deuteronomy 20:16-17.

God tells the Jews to genocide whole populations. Is quoting that hate speech? Or is it history?

HeRat,

Sounds like barbarians at the gate to me, or possibly just fake history.

US history is actually quite simple. Whenever we kill innocent people, it's just collateral damage for a just cause. But when anybody else does the same thing, for a competing cause, they are evil incarnate, Israel excepted of course. Every other country and leader does the same thing. Political truth is illusive at best.

Christians Slaughtering Muslims? That's never happened! Fake News!! Let's debate hate speech instead of talking about it - DR Right

"US history is actually quite simple. Whenever we kill innocent people, it's just collateral damage for a just cause."

Wanna know who, other than the US, was willing to use force in defense of Bosnians? Iran. The other NATO allies were basically told to show a presence, but not use violence in defense of Srebrenica.

"Christians Slaughtering Muslims? That's never happened!"

It's not quite that simple. Leading up to the genocide, Bosnian Muslims had committed atrocities against Bosnian Serbs. And against Croats. And Croats had committed atrocities against the other two. It was basically a three-way knife fight that resulted from different ethnicities wanting to carve out their out chunk of the former Yugoslavia, while the dominant Serbs wanted to keep it for themselves.

It's nice when white people stick together like that, don't you think? Seeing whiteness transcend religion, it's really inspiring!
