Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Last week, they arrived -- two brothers, their wives and their four children -- and plopped onto newly bought bunk beds. The family is one small part of a sudden exodus of tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans racing to Florida after Hurricane Maria, a migration so large it rivals those from New Orleans to Houston after Hurricane Katrina and from Cuba to Miami during the Mariel boatlift. ... More than 168,000 people have flown or sailed out of Puerto Rico to Florida since the hurricane, landing at airports in Orlando, Miami and Tampa, and the port in Fort Lauderdale. Nearly half are arriving in Orlando, where they are tapping their networks of family and friends. An additional 100,000 are booked on flights to Orlando through Dec. 31, county officials said. Large numbers are also settling in the Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach areas.

The Puerto Rican population of Orlando has exploded from 479,000 in 2000 to well over one million this year, according to the Pew Research Center. The impact of this latest wave is likely to stretch from schools and housing to the work force and even politics. Puerto Ricans, who are American citizens and tilt Democratic, could sway the electoral results of one of the country's most pivotal swing states.

One thing that people need to understand is the implications for the future. Moving to florida isn't free. The people moving to florida are those who can afford to.

We saw this in Iraq. The people with the money and the skills to work higher paying jobs left. When the fighting stopped those people did not come back.

I keep thinking we're about to see a building boom in Puerto Rico, but it'll be gated communities and golf courses now that they've got the pesky middle class out of the way.

We're about to see Florida become an angry shade of Blue.

I say welcome. The same welcome I said after Katrina when we had numerous people from LA relocate to Panama City. I wish them well with their new lease on life.

It sounds like the middle class that existed on the island are moving to Florida. Hopefully the poor that stay to rebuild can move up the ladder.

#2, what happened in Iraq? Did the poor fill the jobs or were they hurt even more?

Somehow I just don't imagine the typical alt-right Trump supporter being all that excited about 168,000 brown skinned people moving to the US. MAGA!

Dems should be handing out free plane tickets to PR residents that want to go to Florida. It's their best shot at turning the state blue. They can't win with their own mediocre candidates like Clinton.

"Dems should be handing out free plane tickets to PR residents that want to go to Florida. It's their best shot at turning the state blue. They can't win with their own mediocre candidates like Clinton."

Dems should actually start fighting back against Republican gerrymandering and out right cheating in elections, because Republicans can't win without gerrymandering and cheating. Kris Kobach, "cheater in chief."

A place that was hit by two cat. 5 hurricanes in one year? Probably not a place that would invite investors, your racist, classist dream would be a disaster for anyone willing to invest in your disgusting dream. Global warming is making the Caribbean an area where it will be foolish to invest. Deny all you want but the actuaries won't deny and the lenders won't deny. Puerto Ricans coming to Florida, sorry, bad move on their part. Probably should go to Oklahoma or Montana, the coasts are going to be unstable. Flooding will become too problematic, I'm considering moving myself.

Global warming means it's stupid to live anywhere in Florida. I don't see everybody packing up and moving.

"I don't see everybody packing up and moving."

They were leaving PR til they got hit by "100 year storms" twice in one year. Global warming is making many places uninhabitable and parts of Florida will probably be on that list. I don't like it because I'm probably in one of those places but hopefully I can sell my place and move before it's too late.

They rebuilt things but the local labor pool did not have any operators or money to train them so imported labor is occupying all of the good paying jobs. That money is leaving the country.

There was a proposal to bring groups of Iraqis over for education and then let them go back and fill those positions but it is more profitable for the corporations to "provide" the workers.

Miami Beach floods already. Recent storms in PR, supposedly 100 year storms, demonstrate that predictability of the consequences of global warming are not accurate, things are happening much faster than most scientists predicted.

Stupid Republicans.

They don't like Spanish speakers so they don't help Puerto Rico's recovery and now their bigotry will make Florida a Democrat state for the next hundred years.
