Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Special counsel Robert Mueller asked the Justice Department within the past month to turn over a wide array of documents as part of its ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, ABC News reported Sunday. His team is particularly interested in materials that relate to Trump's dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions's decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe earlier this year, a source who was told about the request informed ABC News. This will be Mueller's first records request to the Justice Department, the very agency that is overseeing the probe. Trump has repeatedly slammed Sessions for recusing himself from the investigation and for Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's subsequent decision to appoint Mueller. Both Sessions and Rosenstein were integral to the decision to remove Comey.

The investigative team is interested in back-and-forth exchanges between Justice Department officials as well as any contact they had with their White House counterparts, the source told ABC News.

This directive comes after Mueller's team asked former top Justice Department officials to describe their time serving at the department, according to the report.

According to the ABC News report, the document directive is the latest sign that Mueller is looking into whether the president or any other administration official improperly attempted to wield influence over an ongoing investigation.

In September, Mueller also reportedly asked the White House to turn over documents related to some of President Trump's most controversial actions in office, including his firing of Comey.

The document requests indicate that at least some aspects of Mueller's probe are focused on the president's behavior in office.

This is the low hanging fruit that rooted in plain sight. Mueller could have returned a finding of OJ to Congress within the first month of his appointment. He knows that reasons Trump so openly violated the law have to be connected to other crimes so that the public will have no doubt of the POTUS criminality nor subversion of his oath. If they've moved to investigating the obvious crime, he must have many of the others well investigated to the point of indictments being issued probably soon. OJ can look and feel wholly political. Other crimes won't be tied to that dynamic, they will be tied to greed and a culture of criminality far beyond coordinated obstruction.

I was always under the impression that it would be the Abuse of Power related to Comey firing that might actually take hold. OJ is more difficult to prove, from what I understand.

Well Obstruction is really what brought Nixon down. The after the fact cover up. In today's partisan times the R's wouldn't see that as sufficient reason alone. Frankly, I wonder how many are in Russia's pocket for some misdeed that the FSB dug up on them.

This is all Muller needs to prove. Mueller has orchestrated a great investigation, imo. Very strategic. If anything is going to take Trump down it's going to be his attempts to stop the Russian investigation, not whether or not there was actual collusion.

The President had the power to fire the FBI Director. It would only be Abuse of Power if he used it to obstruct justice ~ which we know he did because he mouthed off about it on video tape.

Not the brightest bulb in town, is he?
