Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, November 19, 2017

Here's something you probably didn't do this morning: Look in the mirror and ask, am I a jerk? It seems like a reasonable question. There are, presumably, genuine jerks in the world. And many of those jerks, presumably, have a pretty high moral opinion of themselves, or at least a moderate opinion of themselves. They don't think of themselves as jerks, because jerk self-knowledge is hard to come by.

Are you surrounded by fools and non-entities, by people with bad taste and silly desires, by boring people undeserving of your attention, by people who can be understood quickly by applying a broad and negative brush -- creeps, stuck-up snobs, bubbleheaded party kids, smug assholes, and, indeed, jerks?

If this is how the world regularly looks to you, then I have bad news. Likely, you are the jerk.

Good article! However, it's totally academic, and therefore not suitable for the masses. There is a very near and dear category that is not discussed in it. It seems to focus on 'jerks' who do not know or acknowledge that they are jerks. And everyone can agree this is an annoying person, but in terms of real danger, there is a worse type. I know because I am that type.

That is the type who can turn their jerkiness on or off, can regulate their narcissism, can apply varying amounts of psychopathic behavior to 'get the job done'.

It has been my experience that this type of person is a natural result of living in America. The tide of your success in a capitalistic, individualistic society is supposed to raise all boats, so not only is jerkitude required to be 'successful', it is encouraged.

And there is another problem. Suppose you think you are smarter than everyone else? Bad, right? But what if you really are smarter than everyone else? Then what appears to be jerkiness is really just accurate self-awareness. And in america, how is that measured? Not by morals or how many likes you have on facebook, but rather by how much money you make, regardless of how evil you had to be to make it.

I think you might want to read the definition of "sin" in that bible you read. Don't fool yourself.

But what if you really are smarter than everyone else?

Here is what liberals like yourself don't understand, brother Kudzu.

When you think you are so smart that everyone should follow your train of thought only, then you become a jerk.
When you cant understand why everyone else doesn't see your brilliance and isnt like you, then you become a jerk.

Basically, the entire liberal and progressive establishment has become a gaggle of narcissistic, jerks.

Someone has to be the smartest person in the world, just as someone is the fattest, the skinniest, the tallest, the shortest and the least intelligent.

I would think you would stay away from the 'narcissism' angle, since your hero is the biggest narcissist in the world. And you are #2.

I know that i have narcissistic tendencies. I know I can be a jerk. I know i tip-toe into psychopathic decisions occasionally. But like you and your war buddies say, 'collateral damage is no big deal'. If you read my post, you would see that i admit all those things. The important thing, for being a A-type human male is to be aware of these things. Did you ever hear Jesus say, 'oh, I could be wrong'?

Insecure people like you will never ever admit to these traits, because ya know, reality makes average people...average.

#6 So you do or don't see your self as an arrogant jerk?

Personally I try not to be a jerk to someone unless they provoke it(hence deserve it), but that might be just be considered being an arrogant ----- to them...

We, the collective mass of humanity, at various instants express through both thought & action, words & deeds, range in behavior from our most negative to our most saintly.
Psychological studies have shown when we perform a good deed the tendency is to punish those we subsequently encounter who do not meet our standards of acceptable behavior.
In short we're all jerks to somebody sometime & if you "know" the answer your missing something significant.
If one by either physical force or mental acuity uses that advantage for gain at the expense of the weaker you are are no mere jerk but the heart of the problem despite any self-rationalizing justification.

Jerks are people who culpably fail to appreciate the perspectives of the people around them, treating others as tools to be manipulated or fools to be dealt with, rather than as moral and epistemic peers. To be a jerk is to be ignorant in a certain way -- ignorant of the value of others, ignorant of the merit of their ideas and plans, dismissive of their desires and beliefs, unforgiving of their perceived inferiority. The nugget of folk wisdom in calling certain people jerks is to highlight this particular species of deficiency.

Jerks see the world through goggles that dim others' humanity. The server at the restaurant is not a potentially interesting person with a distinctive personality, life story, and set of goals to which you might possibly relate. Instead, he is merely a tool by which to secure a meal or a fool on which you can vent your anger. The people ahead of you at Starbucks are faceless and of no account. Those beneath you in the social hierarchy lack your talents and deserve to get the scut work.

I believe quite a few folks stumble into this territory here.

I try not to, but get the odd comments making me think I have done so inadvertently.

Jerks wear their jerkiness as a badge of honor. They smile when they make other peoples lives worse.

Even if you know more than everyone around you there is nothing that makes you act like a jerk.

Being a jerk is something you do, not something that happens

Take responsibility for your own actions.

you can be kind to anyone. It is a choice

Per the article ...

Jerks see the world through goggles that dim others' humanity.

The other distinctive obstacle to self-knowledge of jerkitude is the jerk's inability to listen.

Plausibly, one of the most important paths to moral self-knowledge is listening, in a genuinely open way, to other people's moral criticisms of you.

The jerk cannot easily do this.

Because the jerk tends not to see others as peers worthy of intellectual and moral respect, the jerk rarely accepts criticism constructively.

This describes to a "T" white peoples reaction to black athletes protesting during the Anthem, and to a larger extent white folk's reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement in general.

I normally don't get all jerky with people that know that the crap they are spewing is opinion, or fantasy, and not fact.

I am very careful about separating fact from fiction and i get very angry at people who don't go to the same trouble. I will definitely be a jerk to them. I may not find joy in their discomfort of finding the truth hard to swallow, but i don't feel hurt by it either. As far as I'm concerned, they were asking for it.

Very Randian of them. Her Superman was such because he couldn't acknowledge the importance of other people. Which is why she was so taken by a serial killer/child dismemberer.

oh boy, here we go. Corky and his biweekly 'Rand was a social darwinist' whine. Tell me, cork, when will your new GOP membership card arrive in the mail?

I'm not sure from where you got this information but it is the complete opposite of reality. Rand's 'supermen' supported 'other people' who lived in reality. They supported ditch-diggers who acknowledged that they were ditch-diggers and who reveled in the quality of the ditch they dug. They did not support ditch-diggers who thought they should be president based on the fact that they somehow avoided having to ever dig a ditch.

Besides, I find it funny that a person who supports Darwinism as a speculative science does not support it as an operative one. Someone has to be the boss and someone has to operate the shovels. the best shovel operators, who prove their metal get to become the boss someday. In your world of anti-social-darwinism, everyone is supposed to be the boss and no one operates the shovel, because operating that shovel would acknowledge that some people are not as accomplished as others.

And yes, that newly promoted boss suddenly becomes a 'jerk', ya know, because why can't I be the boss?

I have performed at varying levels of jerk most of my life. However, having said that, I have arrived at seventy-plus years of age, and have become much more aware of when I am about to act as a jerk, and frequently make an effort, sometimes successful, to not be a jerk. I attribute any success to my wife and her training and conditioning program for almost fifty years.

Yup. Liberals are jerks because they're smarter and right.

Conservatives are jerks because they're angry about their intellectual shortcomings.

Let's listen to the smart jerks instead of the stupid ones.
