Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Efforts to combat sexual harassment on Capitol Hill gained momentum on Tuesday as female lawmakers shared stories of male colleagues engaging in predatory behavior. Lawmakers in both parties had already expressed support for mandatory sexual harassment awareness training, which is currently voluntary for legislative branch staffers. But they went further in a House Administration Committee hearing on Capitol Hill's harassment policies and said even more can be done in a male-dominated workplace where sexual harassment can be pervasive. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), in testimony before the panel, said at least two current members of Congress have engaged in sexual harassment. "In fact, there are two members of Congress, Republican and Democrat, right now, who serve, who have been subject to review or not have been subject to review, but have engaged in sexual harassment," said Speier, who declined to name the male lawmakers.

Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) offered another example. She shared a story of a male lawmaker -- still in Congress -- who asked a young female staffer to bring materials to his residence. He opened the door dressed in only a towel, invited her inside and proceeded to expose himself.

The staffer subsequently quit her job.

"That kind of situation, what are we doing here for women right now who are dealing with somebody like that?" Comstock asked.

Speier had previously shared her own experience of having a chief of staff forcibly kiss her when she was working as a congressional staffer in the 1970s.

Congress passes the law and requires companies to teach prevention and enforce sexual harassment policies. These same Jackholes are only now having themselves go thru training. I think they should all have drug testing like the rest of us, that would be interesting.

What's not going to be pretty about it?

"What's not going to be pretty about it?"

Remember how so many Republicans looked the other way while Mark Foley was pursuing pages?

Yeah he was't alone in his interests.

What's not going to be pretty about it?

That question would be best posed to Al Franken today, and whoever the GOP member of Congress that gets retaliated against tomorrow...

What I've read about the Franken situation with Leeann Tweeden, and the photo of him groping/pretending to grope her breasts, are pretty appalling. He is toast. I am so disappointed.

I doubt he is toast. With all the allegations, I suspect it will be forgotten about by Monday.

Let me know when he admits to do this consistently or a 14 year old comes forward.

Franken does have two mitigating factors in his favor: 1) he has apologized and is not running down the woman; and 2) he was a comedian, and the photo -- while inappropriate -- looks more like a lame attempt at humor than an act of sexual gratification. But her description of him kissing her is way over the line.

Their comedy says a lot about the person. Cosby told rape date jokes for years. "Spanish Fly".

Just ask Frank Dodd what a waitress sandwich is. Ted is not around to help him.
