Hate crimes across the U.S. rose nearly 5 percent in 2016, according to the FBI's annual tally, marking the first time in over 10 years that the country has experienced consecutive annual increases in crimes motivated by bias against race, religion, sexuality, national origin or disability. The FBI's annual hate crimes report, published Monday, counted 6,121 hate crime incidents in America last year, up from 5,850 such incidents in 2015, a rise of 4.6 percent. ... "We now have an unbroken streak of presidential election year increases [in hate crimes] going back to 1992, around the time national data collection commenced," said Brian Levin, a professor at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.

There is an easy explanation for this and one I've been saying for a while now. This is why racism will never go away. It's because people confuse "being offensive" with "being racist". People who are vehemently stuck to one side and opposed to another will use any offensive measures they can to prove why they are right and others aren't. This offense doesn't have etiquette. If a word will be offensive to someone, it's in play. Which can then lead to fights and other violent reactions. It isn't racist, it's offensive. This is easily exampled by looking at sports. Black and white coaches and players have had death threats throughout the last 20 years and the numbers aren't particularly slanted to either side. Yet, towards a black player or coach, people will use the n word which is then automatically seen as racist. But it's not. It's offensive. Just like the ones who send death threats to white players and coaches are vulgar and use whatever offensive words they can find to make an impact. This is all researchable and is proof-positive of my point. It doesn't mean there isn't any racism and some crimes are hate crimes. All it means is that until we can differentiate between the two, racism will never go away and every act that someone sees as offensive made by another race will always be racist even when it isn't.
