Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Josh Moon, Alabama Reporter: Maybe there is no rock bottom for the Alabama Republican Party. Maybe it's just that mushy mud that you find on the bottom of the Tennessee River, and the ALGOP just keeps burrowing deeper and deeper into the muck and filth. Thursday brought on a new bout of digging, with a familiar face behind the shovel. Roy Moore. The ever-constant poster boy for what is wrong in Alabama politics. Too much Bible thumping. Too much holier-than-thou. Too much greed. Too much law breaking. Too much self-involvement.

The Washington Post dropped a story Thursday in which a woman claimed that Moore sexually assaulted her when she was 14 and he was 32. Three other women quoted in that story said they too had been pursued by Moore when they were ages 16, 17 and 18 -- all above the age of consent in Alabama, but well below the age of scandalous for a 30-something man.

For nearly 40-year-old allegations, the Post's story was about as solid as it could be.

Within minutes, national Republican leadership was calling on Moore to step aside, if the allegations are true.

In Alabama, there was a decidedly different response -- justification. Like a bunch of naive moms, Alabama's brainwashed politicos came rushing to the defense of the guy with an R by his name.

It was a pathetic and infuriatingly stupid display of all-out ignorance.

The other is most famous for being kicked off the Supreme Court twice for refusing to follow the law and for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old.

You're doing Cirque du Soleil-level contortions to justify voting for the latter.

This pretty much sums up every single dotard supporter right now.

If Moore does get elected he needs to be permanently saddled with an appropriate nickname and referred to by for his entire term in office by everyone. Something Like Senator Pervert from Alabama. The floor is open to other suggestions, I expect some will be far better than mine.

If you have ever been to Alabama, these paragraphs will not shock you:

Take a look around you.

We're terrible as a state. We're near the bottom in public education, medical care, infrastructure, economy and upward mobility and at the top in infant mortality, poverty, obesity and political corruption.

Our budgets are consistently a mess -- we're going to have to magically find $100 million somewhere next year -- and our state services are so underfunded that they're all but worthless. We're short on troopers, courthouse workers, road crews, maintenance personnel and teachers.

This is what the Roy Moore Republican Party has brought Alabama.

A government built on greed and hatefulness, on shunning anything different and thumbing our nose at any hint of progress.

These people have convinced you that this is all some sort of a grand game, where we win by our chosen party maintaining control, instead of winning by electing men and women who best represent the actual interests of the people.

And this is where it's left you.

It's not a coincidence that the Dukes of Hazard and Boss Hogg were based in the South, regardless of party affiliation (i.e. Huey Long in Louisiana or Nathan Deal in Georgia), Southern States continually dominate the top 10 most corrupt state government surveys.

... To justify Moore's alleged sexual assault of a minor, and his pursuit of teenagers when he was in his 30s, Zeigler turned to the Bible, to the story of Jesus' parents. ...

I fail to see how conflating Biblical marriage with child sexual assault allegations is, in any way, helpful to Judge Moore.

Because that Biblical marriage WAS child sexual assault, just like Moore's. This says more about the Bible than it does about Moore.

"So reality, then?"

Yes, but with a twist. None of us were actually there to swear witnness. But the way the story is told, Joseph and Mary were not married. Joseph, in an effort to protect her honor, devised the story of the immaculant conception. In effect, if true, he was saying "It wasn't me. I never layed a hand on her." Of course, in today's modern world, nobody believes that ~ not really. However, the story has served organized religion well for over 2000 years and gave religion a savior ~ not to mention a great marketing tool, i.e., the "Virgin Mary." In religion you don't ever hear one part of the name without the other. It's one of the best strategies ever devised and Mary herself was probably saved from being stoned to death.

#58 | Posted by Twinpac at 2017-11-13 05:18 AM | Reply

Another interesting aspect of the "Virgin Mary" scenario is that it put a mortal face on a previously unseen "God." Jesus became God, Jr. who was able to walk among them doing "Godlike" thing like they would expect from God himself. Back in those times, believes were more important than reality.

In todays world, Jesus would probably be considered as a political activist or, at the very least, a cultist.

I understood the concept of Jesus as divine was a creation many centuries later by the Council of Nicaea.

Interesting take, though, in #58. What was a scramble to cover dirty deeds turned into an international religion...

I don't know that I'd call it dirty deeds. I believe he loved Mary even though women were little more than chattel at the time. I think Joseph was nothing if not a man of honor.
