Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

John Hillerman, a Texas-born actor best remembered as the stuffy English foil Higgins to Tom Selleck's freewheeling private detective on the hit 1980s television series "Magnum, P.I.," died Nov. 9 at his home in Houston. He was 84. A spokeswoman, Lori De Waal, said the cause of death has yet to be determined. Hillerman was a theater stalwart and versatile Hollywood character actor before becoming a household name as Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on Magnum, P.I., which aired on CBS from 1980 to 1988.

I thought he was 84 in 1988. He played a great role. RIP John.

He had one of the funniest lines in Blazing Saddles, unrepeatable in today's world. I use to watch Magnum PI all the time in which he was perfectly cast and nicely rewarded with an Emmy and a Golden Globe. RIP

Hillerman was from Texas, something one might not guess considering his Emmy-winning portrayal as a "British butler" running Robin Masters Estate.

He is perhaps best remembered for his role as former British Army Sergeant Major Jonathan Higgins in Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988), for which he learned an English accent by listening to a recording of Laurence Olivier reciting Hamlet.

He considered Higgins his favorite role, and described the character in a 1988 interview as "think[ing] he's the only sane character [in the show], and everyone else is stark raving mad."

Awesome ~

Pinchaloaf, this is the episode that "Higgins, Shut up!" is from: "J. 'Digger' Doyle", Season 1, Episode 17

www.imdb.com

I remember seeing it the first time as a kid in '81 and laughing myself into a bronchial attack.

Always thought Magnum was cool...even to the point of growing a bushy orange moustache from age 19 on and never shaving it off since.

Here's a great exchange between Magnum and Higgins while Higgins and Agatha reenact one the Battle of Britain's most brilliant aerial dogfights in preparation of the Queen's jubilee -- Higgins is command of the RAF while Agatha graciously accepted the thankless job of taking the Nazis side ... www.youtube.com
