Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, November 07, 2017

Harry Enten, FiveThirtyEight: The first major statewide elections since President Trump was inaugurated take place on Tuesday. The governor's race in New Jersey looks like it will be a blowout. But Virginia's governor's race is more interesting: Former Republican National Committee Chairman and 2014 U.S. Senate candidate Ed Gillespie faces off against Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam. ... Polls show a fairly close race, with Northam slightly favored to win. An average of the last 10 surveys give Northam a 46 percent-to-43 percent advantage. Over the past month, there has been a tightening of the race, with Gillespie closing what had been a 6-point lead. In the individual polls, though, there is a fairly widespread.

One last thing to remember: The heavily Democratic Washington suburbs tend to report their results later than the rest of the state. So just because Gillespie has an early lead, it doesn't mean he's going to win. Trump led very late into the evening on Election Day 2016 before losing the state by 5 points.

The polls suggest a similar fate awaits Gillespie in 2017, though we won't know until the votes are actually counted.

Gillespie - Born and raised in God's Country- Browns Mills, NJ. A good man for governor. Prepare for the gnashing of teeth and finger-pointing when Eddie wins. Does Perez gets booted? Will Dems FINALLY admit that America isn't buying what they're selling? Will Lassie ever get Timmy out of that well? Good times ahead.

My guess is that Northam wins a close one, the DC suburbs in VA have doubled in size in the last 20 years, swinging the State Blue. They will report last and hand the election to Northam.

The most important election today that actually effects my life?... Trying to pass a small property tax increase, in a place that hasn't passed any kind of tax increase in two decades, just so our local ambulance service doesn't continue to lose $300,000 a year and have to drastically cut services.

I am sooo f'n tired of hearing ignorant Republicans tell me that such services should "live within their means".

BTW, Northam has run a very poor race for the last month. When did Democrats become so inept?

If Gillespie pulls out the victory you can point to the day that the Latino Victory Fund ran that commercial showing the truck with the Gillespie bumper sticker and a confederate flag running down Latino children just days before the Manhattan truck attack. Don't get me wrong, Gillespie's MS-13 ads were disgusting, but the backlash over the LVF ad was astoundingly swift.

"President Trump weighed in on Virginia's hotly contested race for governor Tuesday, underscoring the importance of an election seen as a test of his popularity and its possible effect on state-level politics nationwide.

Emphasizing crime and the prevalence of the Salvadoran gang MS-13 as reasons to support Republican Ed Gillespie over Democrat Ralph Northam, Trump reinforced the negativity that has dominated the final days of the close race and left voters dismayed.

"Ralph Northam will allow crime to be rampant in Virginia," Trump wrote on Twitter. If the Republican wins, Trump said, "MS-13 and crime will be gone."

A good man for governor.

Ed Gillespie is the flackiest flack in flacktown. He's a lifelong party insider and former RNC chair. No one is more inside-the-beltway than this guy. It's funny to see Trumpers pretzel themselves into Gillespie supporters. Gillespie is what Trump pretended to oppose in his campaign.

Gillespie is a Swamp Monster that Trump went all out to get elected.... the Pres, though, has no coattails.

"Voters' concern about health care boost Northam"

A substantial anti-Trump vote and a broad advantage on health care boosted Northam in Virginia's gubernatorial race, while Gillespie pushed back with vast support from evangelical and working-class whites in preliminary exit poll results.

With the outcome uncertain as polls closed, 33 percent of Virginia voters said they were casting their ballots to show opposition to Donald Trump, twice as many as said they were voting to show him support (17 percent).

From 538:

One final note: It's hard not to conclude the August events in Charlottesville had a galvanizing effect on Democrats in that area. Across the state, raw votes cast were up 16 percent over 2013. But in the city of Charlottesville, raw votes cast were up 31 percent. Northam took 84 percent of the vote there.

"Trump just made a bad night for Republicans much worse for himself

On Tuesday night, the bottom fell out. Largely on the strength of an unexpected surge in turnout, Northam won easily. Expected to prevail by a bit over three points, he'll end up with a victory of at least twice that size. After a close loss in a Senate race in 2014, Gillespie lost again, this time by much more.

Trump wasted no time in distancing himself from Gillespie, enjoying the spaciousness of his now-280-character tweets.

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don't forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!
8:40 PM - Nov 7, 2017

This was not a wise tweet.

We've noted before that Trump has an insurance premium against any calls for his impeachment. His popularity with Republicans has slipped since the beginning of his presidency, but he's still very popular with them, particularly more conservative members of his party.

Trump's tweet distancing himself from Gillespie sugarcoats the election in a way that may make Trump feel better but probably isn't fooling anyone on Capitol Hill. His claim that the GOP won four of four federal races misses a few important points.

The first is that those races were in Republican-held districts. The second is that the Democrats saw big gains in most of those races relative to past elections. The third is that the figure is actually four of five; Trump likes to ignore a race in California won by the Democrats.

But it also does something very dangerous for Trump right now. It shows, yet again, that he isn't loyal to his political partners."

He has proven himself to be a liar of gargantuan proportions and more concerned about golfing and taking care of the 1% than the middle class so not only will he face the people that didn't like him in 2016, but now all the people that have seen just what a failure for them he is.
