Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

David Rothkopf, Washington Post: Donald Trump is reinventing the kowtow for the Twitter age. Last week, in fawning tweets, he celebrated Chinese President Xi Jinping's "extraordinary elevation" at the 19th Chinese Communist Party Congress, and in a TV interview he bragged that he and Xi had the best "president-president" relationship ever. It was over the top -- especially in light of the fact that Xi is an authoritarian leader. Clearly, Trump, a man not known for his humility, wants something. China is the most important stop on his 12-day, five nation Asia tour, which begins Friday. In Beijing, Trump will be hoping for not only progress on North Korea and trade issues, but for a little of Xi's momentum, power and prestige to rub off on him.

The lasting message of Trump's trip could well be the one foretold by the obsequiousness of his tweets last week. If his visit is "historic," as he predicted on social media, it will be because it is the first in which an American president discovers he has traveled all the way to Beijing to meet with the most powerful man in the world.

Pres Trump got little, if anything, from Prime Minister Abe during the visit to Japan.

Pres Trump wanted the Japanese to buy more American cars. The last time the US was asking Japan to buy American cars, one little detail was lost in the complaints --- Japan drives on the left side of the road, and the US car manufacturers did not make cars with the control on the correct side of the car for left-side of the road driving.

Maybe his visit with China will be more fruitful.

"especially in light of the fact that Xi is an authoritarian leader."

Trump, Xi, Putin... all authoritarian leaders.

Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler all offer right hand drive models in Japan (they make them in Australia mostly), it is the dealer networks that they never sunk money into that are the problem. The dealers in Japan are like a lifestyle choice, with saleman making housecalls, repairmen picking up the car, entertainment and information centers in the dealerships for people to hang out in, etc.

BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar all do pretty well in Japan because they have sunk Billions of Yen into their networks.

Back on topic, you guys crack me up...if Trump doesn't flatter a leader, you run in circles with your arms flapping, if he does "kowtow" to a leader you do the same.

Must be exhausting.

"President Trump delivered a rebuke to Japan Inc on Monday.
"Try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over. Is that possible to ask? That's not rude. Is that rude? I don't think so," Trump told executives from local automakers during a trip to Japan."

Someone should tell Donny Dealmaker how many autos Japan builds on the islands of Ohio and Alabama.

@#4 ... Ford, GM and Fiat Chrysler all offer right hand drive models in Japan (they make them in Australia mostly), ...

Thanks for the update. I hadn't checked recently if cars with right-hand drive were made in the US. Do you know if any are made in the US and sent to Japan? Or England?

The time I was speaking of occurred when Japan was starting to sell a lot of autos here, mid-80's or so. There was so much complaining that the Japanese weren't buying US cars. Someone finally asked the Japanese why, and were told of the improper configuration of the controls.

It's good to see, at least, that that part of the problem has been fixed. Sort of.

He knows, he said it right after your quote.

But you hate him, we get it.

He'll be considered an amateur at kowtowing to the leaders of other countries when compared to obama.

Nixon went to China, met with Mao. The transfer of wealth began with that trip and Donald's interaction with Xi ain't going to change that. Billionaires profit while the working class suffers, Xi isn't stupid. He understands that the billionaire oligarchs are the people he needs to cater to in order to transfer as much wealth as possible from the United States to China. That is what world leaders do, then there is the clueless Trump who doesn't understand what is going on and shouldn't be in office.

Pathetically stupid comment.

"But you hate him, we get it."

Oh gee, why should we hate him? Has he disrupted the insurance markets making health insurance unaffordable for million and did so completely without any logical reason other than that black guy got the ACA passed. But, "hate him?" Yep! I despise him and his whole family who think they should run America like a monarchy. Why is Inanka Trump having an office in the WH? And Kushner too? I can't wait for them to be gone and forgotten as the Reality TV personalities that they are. The stupid 1/3 of America propelled these morons into power and that same stupid 1/3 will pay the price for it because Trump and Co. doesn't give a s**t about you.

Donald always goes dog-down in reaction to anyone he thinks is more powerful than he is.

Not hate. Disgust. The question behind you're remark is whether the disgust is rational. Yes, it is.

I can't think of any public figure who so embodies nothing, NOTHING that I admire.

You want me to lie about Trump's good qualities? That might get me a spot in his Cabinet but it won't make me a good human being.

Oh, I get why, but I don't run around trying to find fault in everything he does, it is an unnecessary exercise given the fact that he does plenty of idiotic things without anyone's help.

You all, on the other hand, are pathological about him.

If Donald were a mere idiot, nothing would be this bad. But he's actinic, destructive. He has to be watched, and countered. Shrugging your shoulders when a kid plays with matches is not mature. Grow up.

It's always fun to read an article when a Democrat learns a new word. They want praises from their Daddy and Mommy that they learned something!

"In the end, Trump is likely to make very little in the way of meaningful gains on any major issues during his stay"

Another conclusion made by an opposing party member of the POTUS in power that happens every...single...Presidency. Obama made almost no advancements with China; in fact, his legacy of China relations is enabling outsourcing opportunities far more than what they were before he was in office. Good ol' W couldn't get anything done in China because he didn't believe they had anything to offer. Clinton was the biggest enabler of China's power growth. And on and on on.

But yeah, expecting Trump to do anything beyond what those guys could do just makes you look like you have really terrible historical knowledge. And I think you are placing too much faith in Trump from the outset by thinking anything otherwise than this conclusion.

Jeez. You have really terrible historical knowledge.
