Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Investigators looking into the so-called "Trump dossier" were not surprised when news broke Tuesday night that the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC, working through the Democrats' law firm, Perkins Coie, financed the "salacious and unverified" compilation of allegations of Trump collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential campaign. (The "salacious and unverified" description comes from former FBI Director James Comey.)

There had been plenty of talk about the Democrats and Perkins Coie, so much that investigators almost assumed that was the case. But it wasn't until the Washington Post broke the story that it was confirmed.

"I'm shocked," one lawmaker joked Tuesday night. "Who could have ever guessed?

This is actually a Washington Post story. I tried linking the WaPo article, but it wouldn't pull up and I'm not paying to subscribe just so I can post it here. Interestingly, I read the WaPo article earlier this morning without difficulty.

As much as I hate this news, it belongs on the front page. As reported by WaPo, it really gives cover to a lot of the snakes in Trump's circle.

What is being lost in the hullabaloo is that the dossier was funded by a GOP donor before the DNC.

RCade hates it more, so it will remain on the backpage, which is more fun anyway.

According to NYT's story on 1/11/17, GPS fusion was hired by a GOP donor in 9/15:

"The story began in September 2015, when a wealthy Republican donor who strongly opposed Mr. Trump put up the money to hire a Washington research firm run by former journalists, Fusion GPS, to compile a dossier about the real estate magnate's past scandals and weaknesses, according to a person familiar with the effort. The person described the opposition research work on condition of anonymity, citing the volatile nature of the story and the likelihood of future legal disputes. The identity of the donor is unclear.

Fusion GPS, headed by a former Wall Street Journal journalist known for his dogged reporting, Glenn Simpson, most often works for business clients. But in presidential elections, the firm is sometimes hired by candidates, party organizations or donors to do political "oppo" work -- shorthand for opposition research -- on the side.

It is routine work and ordinarily involves creating a big, searchable database of public information: past news reports, documents from lawsuits and other relevant data. For months, Fusion GPS gathered the documents and put together the files from Mr. Trump's past in business and entertainment, a rich target."

The article also points out that backers of Clinton took an interest in the oppo research after the GOP donor backed out:

"After Mr. Trump emerged as the presumptive nominee in the spring, the Republican interest in financing the effort ended. But Democratic supporters of Hillary Clinton were very interested, and Fusion GPS kept doing the same deep dives, but on behalf of new clients."

Rep. Maxine Waters Says That Leaked Dossier's Infamous Sex Allegations Against Donald Trump Are True

Although those allegations are unconfirmed, Waters said that, yes, in fact, he did do those things.

"We already know about the part about the coverage they have on him with sex actions is supposed to be true," said Waters. "They have said that's absolutely true, some other things they kind of allude to."

Velshi popped the obvious question: How does she even know if the allegations are true? In an almost Trump-ian move, Waters avoided giving a direct answer. "You understand that I am saying the investigations must be done, the drilling down must be done," she said. "We must get to the facts of what it has been about."

Maxine needs to read this:

Fact Versus Fiction in the Steele Dossier

Steele's dossier is something rarely seen by the public: a raw, unfiltered human intelligence assessment. This is the sort of thing Steele compiled during his MI6 service, so it's no surprise that he repeated the exercise when he examined Trump's Kremlin connections.

However, such raw HUMINT reports are unfamiliar to the public, which focused on Steele's porn-worthy allegations more than the substance of alleged collusion between Trump and Moscow. The dossier, being unfiltered intelligence, some of it derived from second-hand sources in Russia, is best considered lead information only, that is, a jumping-off point for additional investigation -- not the final word on anything. As a stand-alone report, its uses are limited for any seasoned intelligence analyst...

[T]he dossier's "pee-pee tape" claim is viewed with derision by most Western spies who know the Russians. It's very likely that the Kremlin possesses kompromat on the president -- senior intelligence sources from several countries have confirmed to me that unpleasant videos of Trump exist -- yet there's no reason to believe Steele's particular claim here, without corroborating evidence.
