CIA Director Mike Pompeo said the United States has to act as if North Korea is on the verge of being able to strike it with a missile and act accordingly -- and that President Donald Trump is ready to do so. "From a US policy perspective, we ought to behave as if we are on the cusp of them achieving that objective," Pompeo said Thursday at a security forum held by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. "They are so far along in that, it's now a matter of thinking about how do you stop the final step."

"Whether it happens on Tuesday or a month from Tuesday, we're in a time where the President has concluded that we have a global effort to ensure that [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Un does not obtain that capacity," Pompeo continued.

Pompeo is among a number of former officials who have been signaling the increased possibility of a slide into military confrontation with North Korea over its refusal to back down from its nuclear program.

The CIA chief spoke at the forum shortly before national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who also said the President wasn't prepared to accept a nuclear Pyongyang.

Donald is set on getting his millions dead. That will place him in rarefied company, alongside Pol Pot perhaps.

But, only 10 or 20 million will be killed tops!"

They're all idiots. We should wait till NK nukes San Francisco before we do something about it. Preemptive strikes are way overrated.

Attacking first may assure San Francisco gets nuked.

It's war. It's beyond complicated, and beyond dangerous.

Therefore, Donald will screw it up.

A new North Korea problem
www.axios.com

..."[A]nalysts ... see signs that Mount Mantap, the 7,200-foot-high peak under which North Korea detonates its nuclear bombs, is suffering from 'tired mountain syndrome,'" the WashPost reports on A1:

Why it matters: "Chinese scientists ... have warned that further nuclear tests [by North Korea] could cause the mountain to collapse and release the radiation from the blast."...

I'm not for the the treats that Donald is pumping out but we need to get serious about missile defense systems capable of intercepting ICBMs - especially the newer designs from Russia. I really don't want to see even a "small" nuclear war and if we can stop them with some assurity, there won't be good reason to send them in the first place...

I am NOT in favor of war but something has to be done about NK though. I have watched this CF for decades. Kim Jong Un is far more brash and arrogant than his father and who knows where he will stop - he actually scares me far more than tRupm. He is playing a dangerous game and calling the West's bluff. Frankly - we need to give the Chinese a back room ultimatum. Deal with Rocket Boy, de-nuke NK and set up his replacement or we do.

I'm sure that would set China off on a laughing fit from which them may never recover.

What you "NEED" to do is not send that job application you just printed to the State Department.

The Moron Quota is already full there.

A meteor strike maybe..more likely than a NK nuke. I'd think a cyber attack would be a more reasonable worry.

Kim isn't worried about Mueller, that'd be trump. after our 1st strike, do we occupy? does anyone think that

china will just sit and watch. does anyone think that NK doesn't have hundreds, at least, operatives in SK. And

what about SK, do they get no say in what's being threatened by USA. we can either maintain a defensive posture

and continue to negotiate or we can start a war. vietnam, iraq, afghanistan..how's that worked out?

You do realize we've already spent trillions of dollars on such systems? And we're no safer now than we were before that a*****e Reagan started us down this path.

And what about SK, do they get no say in what's being threatened by USA.

The United States has agreed not to take any military action against North Korea without first getting South Korea's approval, President Moon Jae-in said Thursday as he marked 100 days in office.

Backing up the president's assertion, Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in Beijing that there was "no question" that South Korea would be consulted before any possible military action was taken on the Korean Peninsula.

"South Korea is an ally and everything we do in the region is in the context of our alliance," Dunford told reporters traveling with him on a trip that has taken him to Seoul and Beijing. Dunford plans to be in Tokyo on Friday.

The risk to South Korea has restrained successive American administrations striking North Korea to take out its nuclear and missile facilities, even as its capability has improved to the point where it now poses a threat to the U.S. mainland.

But a strike on North Korea would likely cause Pyongyang to unleash conventional artillery at Seoul, just over the border. Ten million people live in the South Korean capital but as many as 25 million people - half the population - live in the greater Seoul region and within North Korean artillery range.

SK: "without first getting South Korea's approval"

USA: "South Korea would be consulted"

World of difference between those two statements.
