Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl pleaded guilty Monday to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. "I understand that leaving was against the law," said Bergdahl, whose decision to walk off his remote post in Afghanistan in 2009 prompted intense search and recovery missions, during which some of his comrades were seriously wounded. "At the time, I had no intention of causing search and recovery operations," Bergdahl said. The misbehavior charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, while the desertion charge is punishable by up to five years.

Don't agree, while they haven't yet reached a stipulation of facts, they probably have a plea deal in place, he did 5 years of equivalence so he may do a little more time then get his dishonorable.

That being said, I am glad this is over, it is time to move on.

Agreed. Nothing positive can be achieved by continuing to drag this story through the mud.

#2,

Agreed. He needs to be made an example of. Sentence him to 20 years, take time off for being a prisoner of war and move on.

Okay. Politics aside... repeat POLITICS ASIDE... did any American soldiers die or not searching for Bergdahl. Please give me a credible citation so I can confirm one way or the other.

From the article:

"The judge has ruled that a Navy SEAL who suffered a career-ending leg wound and an Army National Guard sergeant whose head wound put him in a wheel chair would not have been hurt in firefights had they not been searching for Bergdahl."

Sniper's link shows that two soldiers died looking for Bergdahl. The other four died in unrelated situations and are being dubiously blamed on Bergdahl.

#9 | Posted by rcade at 2017-10-16 06:07 PM | Reply

The Army Sanity Board concluded that Bergdahl had "schizotypal personality disorder" when he deserted and classified it as a "severe mental disease or defect."

When the U.S. sends a mentally unstable person to war, it is as culpable for his actions as he is.

So 2 American soldiers in fact did die searching for Bergdahl? Ok. That's what I wanted to know.

Send him home. He's been through enough.

Now that Obama is gone from the scene they cannot use him to bash Obama anymore so the right has no more use for him.

Agreed. Young men nationwide should see how the military makes men insane, and then how it treats them once they're insane.

Generally speaking, a personality disorder is not a mental disease. But I don't know about "schizotypal" personality disorders. I wish I knew more because currently I'm pretty skeptical.

I don't think an Army Sanity Board would overdiagnose. The Army wouldn't want to admit that war mangles minds.

You don't even have to go into war for the military to mangle your mind. That's what basic training is for. To make you stop thinking about ethics, right and wrong, or the big picture, and make you just care about obeying orders and protecting the other suckers in your tribe.

given the number of documented sexual molestations that have occurred in all branches of

the armed services. molestations and rapes that were ignored or covered up..in light of that

I don't put much credence into the outrage displayed over what this guy did. i'll not besmirch

the honor of or the courage displayed by the soldiers who suffered attempting to rescue

bergdahl but we all know it was BS that they were there in the first place. and before i could

really feel comfortable having an opinion i'd need to know, were they looking for him to rescue

or were they trying to apprehend someone they thought had deserted their post.

I'm in no position to disagree but is there another reputable body that can evaluate him? We're taking the army's word for it?

The military runs its own show.

He's a deserter but I wish he would have pled guilty under Obama. Now it's possible that Trump will exploit this in order to flaunt his obviously false patriotism.

"The military runs its own show."

To a point. Yes, they get first dibs on evaluating him. But it is pretty commonplace for those facing serious charges to go outside the military for representation and resources. In this case, I would be surprised if either 1) he did and was told the evidence is too overwhelming and to not waste his parent's money, or 2) they were willing to cut him a deal.

Did he suffer this BEFORE or AFTER desertion?

#24 | Posted by Petrous at 2017-10-17 04:02 PM | Reply

His desertion is believed to have been a major factor in the deaths of six men who were reportedly looking for him or whose movements for the mission were changed because the platoon was still searching for Bergdahl.

Here are their names:

Staff Sgt. Clayton Bowen
Morris Walker
Staff Sgt. Kurt Curtiss
2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews
Matthew Michael Martinek
Staff Sgt. Michael Murphrey

Sniper should have been able to spot the "fake news" when it doesn't mention a soldier's rank.

This is of course presuming Sniper didn't already know it was fake news when he was posting it. I'm thinking he's the type who can't readily tell the difference, but you never can tell these days.

screw those six and bergdahl to...in the overall scheme of things those guys and the thousands
of others that have died in afghanistan and iraq are a damned small price to pay for all the
wonderful things we've done for those people. that's why we're still there fourteen years later
kicking ass and taking names. it's almost my bedtime and i'll sleep peacefully knowing that i'm
being protected from those who hate me for my freedom.MAGA

I was in Afghanistan during all this. A lot of missions were moved because of his desertion. We didn't know he left of his own accord at first. I think he wanted to make a statement and didn't understand the nature of the Taliban. I think he had some romanticized vision of them. He found out otherwise.

What stupid, stupid drivel.

We get it. You don't like the military. Maybe you didn't make it. Maybe you couldn't serve. Maybe they rejected you. Or maybe you have a complex about being protected by men greater than you. Being protected by men who frighten you.

We get it.

He should absolutely be locked up. He knew what he was doing when he took the oath of enlistment, and he knew exactly what he was doing when he deserted. It was an absolute disgrace that Obama was parading him around like he was a POW. It is crazy that anyone here would think about defending him. He had no mental illness. Whoever brought that up was bringing up fake news.
