Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, October 12, 2017

Donald Trump sat and laughed with Fox News host Sean Hannity as the "Retreat" bugle call was played. Tradition dictates that members of the military and civilian leadership stand at attention to respect the U.S. flag during the solemn ceremony. Trump's act of disrespect occurred during an interview that happened in a hangar at the Air National Guard base in Pennsylvania. Trump referred to the bugle call as a "nice sound," and asked Hannity if they were playing it "in honor of his ratings." As the official Army website notes, playing "Retreat" is "one of the oldest traditions in the U.S. Army, which dates back to the Revolutionary War." Playing the song is used "to signal the end of the duty day and pay respect to the nation's flag."

TRUMP: What a nice sound that is. Are they playing that for you or for me? They're playing that in honor of his ratings. Did you see how good his ratings are? He's beating everybody.

HANNITY: I think they'll be higher tonight. I'm just guessing.

As "Retreat" is played, the Army website explains, "Once the bugle sounds, all personnel driving on the installation should stop. Service members and government civilian personnel are encouraged to turn off their vehicles, and, if safe to do so, exit to render the appropriate honors." ...

The late comedian Robin Williams, while performing for soldiers in Kuwait, stopped in the middle of his comedy routine to stand at attention and honor the flag during the "Retreat" ceremony.

All of the Trumpers who are outraged about anthem disrespect are going to flip out about this. They will not hold anything back in their criticism of the president for this crass act during a solemn moment of military honor.

Or not.

Seems like he did this out of ignorance. Insulting POWs was on purpose. As was ridiculously claiming he had personally sacrificed for his country in the context of discussing a family who lost a son on the battlefield. He hasn't killed thousands of soldiers like Bush did but he certainly doesn't respect them either. And yeah I'm sure the nfl pants ------- will get around to recognizing this real soon...

Why would they? He was simply honouring the vets and military by joking about their traditions. It's not like he did something so disruptive and unforgivable like silently taking a knee.

Trump has an excuse. He's an ignorant ---- moron so it's ok.

But, but ... Trump knows what he is doing. Trump obviously did this on purpose as we all know how smart he is. Just ask him!

This is another sign that Trump's elevator doesn't reach the penthouse any more. He's not of sound mind and the pressures of the presidency and his colossal ego are making it worse by the day.

Of course, his ratings are swirling around the toilet bowl, so he's just lying to himself and Hannity is telling him what he wants to hear. The military is just a backdrop for His Orangeness.

So if we should fire NFL players for similar incidents, should we fire Trump?

The anti-kneeling protests were just to silence voices. Nothing more. They used the flag and veterans for selfish political reasons, like they always do.

For the militarily ignorant, Retreat is the first of two bugle calls, the only action required is to stop and dismount. The second call is Hail to the colors, which requires military members to salute. Usually the pause between the two calls is punctuated by a cannon shot at larger posts.

All personnel driving on the installation must stop. Servicemembers and government civilian personnel will turn off their vehicles and if safe to do so, exit their vehicles and render the appropriate honors. Individuals outside of buildings will render the appropriate honors to the flag during the Retreat ceremony.

Disabled persons and small children are not required to exit their vehicles. If in a group in a military vehicle or bus, only the senior occupant exits the vehicle and renders honors.

When you hear the first note of "Retreat" come to the position of attention and face the flag (or the direction the music is coming from if the flag is not visible).

Servicemembers in uniform render the hand salute at the first note of "To the Colors." Normally the flag is faced when saluting unless duty requires you to face in another direction. At the conclusion of the music resume your regular duties.

When in a formation or a group, the senior servicemember present will call the group to "Attention" and then "Parade, Rest" at the first note of "Retreat." At the first note of "To the Colors" the senior servicemember will call the group to "Attention" and "Present, Arms." At the conclusion the senior servicemember will give the command "Order, Arms." Those in civilian clothing will remove their headgear and place their right hand over their heart at the first note of "To the Colors." Servicemembers not in uniform and retired servicemembers may render the hand salute if they choose.

He just likes bases that don't retreat, OK?

#15 | Posted by BruceBanner At least he didn't say "All this for a damn flag" as Michell Obama was caught saying. Trump has never spent a day in uniform, I don't expect him to know much, but I could expect him to listen. A quality Barack never exhibited.

"At least he didn't say "All this for a damn flag" as Michell Obama was caught saying. "

Trump could wipe his ass with the flag and you'd find a reason that's okay.

Screw you Doc, and take that pos with you!

A viral video has been circulating since October 2011 that purportedly shows former First Lady Michelle Obama denigrating the American flag. The video is generally attached to emails that people have been sending to friends, acquaintances, and others. The episode is a complete fabrication. Obama never spoke any words belittling the flag or dishonoring the ceremony. www.thoughtco.com
