Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Pets are replacing America's children. According to the marketing research firm Mintel, two-thirds of American pet owners treat their pets as "part of the family." One-third say that their pets understand their feelings better than most humans. Half care as much about the health of their pet as about any family member. (Pet owners who have actual children are less likely to speak of their pets in these terms.) Forty-four percent of young pet owners see their pets as "starter children." Seventeen percent of pet owners bought pet costumes last year, and 10 percent bought pet strollers. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Fido in the baby carriage.

We are sentimental about pets because we are unwilling to welcome human life -- or so says Pope Francis. In 2014, he condemned those who choose not to have children because they fear poverty and sickness. Such people think, "It's better . . . more comfortable -- to have a dog, two cats, and the love goes to the two cats and the dog." But their love of animals shows their indifference to man.

I've raised three kids. Love each of them. Love my dogs, too. Hard not to. Francis is off base a bit here.

My cat actually seems to love me. He understands that cat food comes from me (this happened after I got sick for a week and he had to live on birds and mice - not a comfortable living). Yeah, my cat thought I was dead or something. His reaction was pure joy when I came back.

Today he rubs against me and tries to bite my shoes, purring the whole time. I pet him and tell him he's a good kitty. Originally, he was like "feed me and ---- off".

He's orange, if your curious. And I still find small feathery murder scenes on my back porch where he occasional catches unwary birds.

I have to agree with Frankie here. I have a dog. I love my dog. The human race can bugger off.

Encouraging poor people to pop out kids is showing his indifference to man.

I understand where the author is coming from, sort of. I think one of the stupidest phrases in the English language is "fur baby". I disagree with the Pope on replacing kids with pets, though. I think it's a symptom of America's increasingly narcissistic society. More and more people are doing it because they don't want to have their "me" time hampered by having to take care of someone else and you can't just leave a kid at the pound.

When I was in China, we were visiting this Buddhist temple complex, and came across this sign that read "Care For Dog" over top of a dog house. My wife and I looked at each other and said, "Awww...where's the dog - we'll care for it?" as we walked towards the dog house. That's when the fiercest animal I've ever seen came barreling towards us, snapping and snarling, then hit the end of his chain about 2 feet from me.

Scared the Bejesus out of us both. haha..."Care for Dog" - Chinglish for 'Beware of Dog'

I saw one of those car magnets that was a dogs paw and it said "I love my two mommies".

It could mean that the dog loves his female owner and its birth mother, but I read it as "I'm owned by two lesbians".

Either way, what a stupid frigging thing to put on a car.
