Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, October 09, 2017

Over just one month of player, coach, and owner protests of the flag and National Anthem, the National Football League has gone from America's sport to the least liked of top professional and college sports, according to a new poll.

From the end of August to the end of September, the favorable ratings for the NFL have dropped from 57 percent to 44 percent, and it has the highest unfavorable rating – 40 percent – of any big sport, according to the Winston Group survey provided exclusively to Secrets.

Worse for football, which was already seeing lower TV ratings and empty stadium seats, the month of protests and complaints about them from President Trump drove core fans, men 34-54, away, the most significant indicator that NFL brass aren't in touch with their base.

I enjoyed a great NFL weekend.

I also enjoyed Trump chumps who didn't enjoy this NFL weekend because they want to make everything about politics to please Dear Leader and distract from his litany of failures.

Not in the short term. Most tickets are sold already. The current TV contract goes through 2022.

Trump could only hurt the NFL by continuing to protest against protesters for years. But he's got the attention span of a gnat on Ritalin, so what are the odds he'll even remember he's angry about this in a month?

I didn't watch any NFL football the last two weeks.
Hockey season is here!

When they take a knee against wife beaters and thuggery i may tune in. Just kidding.

I think the decline in ratings is due to parody. I liked having haves and have nots. This year, other than KC there aren't any really good teams. There used to be a good 1/2 dozen teams that were worth watching. I was bored out of my skull the first few weeks of the season due to lackluster play.

Warner wasn't a genetic freak.

For a 90's quarterback he was: 6'2", 220, 4.9 speed, he owns three of the top five highest single-game passing yardage totals in Super Bowl history, the seventh-highest career passer rating of all-time (93.7) and the fourth-highest career completion percentage in NFL history with 65.5%.

To put it into perspective, at that size he could have been an offensive lineman in the 1970s and a defensive lineman in the 1980s.

He's been a vocal opponent of professional sports for years and years. He thinks cities shouldn't subsidize stadiums, the NFL shouldn't be "non-profit", etc........in short, Nulli doesn't support the billions of dollars being passed through professional sports in general.

It doesn't have a damn thing to do with the color of an athlete and you don't have one single shred of proof otherwise.

When you call someone a freak because of their genes, it gets to phenotype, which gets to racism.

--Thug is a term appropriate for men who have a history of domestic violence.

Or just violent in general, regardless of race or cause.

A quick search reveals
Dez Bryant, Ezekiel Elliot, Greg Hardy and Jourdan Lewis
are four Cowbowys in the Jerry Jones era with a history of domestic violence.

All four are black.
Are these the thugs?

Jourdan Lewis was acquitted of all charges. He threw a pillow after being woken up by his girlfriend who was screaming at him for leaving a light on.

Eberly, do you know the word thug has racial connotations, or not?

Thug is a generic term and in the world of sports back in the '70's it was most commonly applied to hockey players in the NHL, which was (and still is) a league predominantly occupied by white athletes.

Kudos to Eberly for calling out the race-baiting on this thread. It's something that goes unchallenged far too often.

It's a matter of context.

John McWhorter, associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, about the use of the word "thug":

Well, the truth is that thug today is a nominally polite way of using the N-word. Many people suspect it, and they are correct. When somebody talks about thugs ruining a place, it is almost impossible today that they are referring to somebody with blond hair. It is a sly way of saying there go those black people ruining things again. And so anybody who wonders whether thug is becoming the new N-word doesn't need to. It's most certainly is.

One of the things that Americans have a whole lot of trouble with - actually, that people in developed societies with written languages have trouble with - is that words never keep their meanings over time. A word is a thing on the move. A word is a process. And that's what's so confusing about the N-word. And that's what's so confusing now about this word, thug. Any discussion where we pretend that it only means one thing is just going to lead to dissension and confusion.

No, you didn't.

Nulli was baselessly being called a racist and Eberly rightly called it out.

It's impossible to keep up with all of the 'dog-whistle' words that are no longer allowed to be used and not be labeled a racist.

I remember some guest on MSNBC claiming that saying "IRS" is racist because Obama, or something.

So, if a white man engages in thuggery and gets labeled a thug, it's fine. But if it's a black man then it's racist to call him a thug if he engages in thuggery?

To elaborate, the word thug has many different contextual meanings depending upon who is using it and how it is used. If the subject is hockey players, it likely has no racial connotation although there certainly are more players of color in the league today than ever before, but not all of them are "goon" style players.

But when the subject matter touches on criminality or problems within urban American society, the term most certainly carries racial connotations and to deny this reality is to be blind to simple truths.

So again, context matters, and only those wishing to bury their intellectual heads in the sand would try to use historical dictionary definitions as the be-all and end-all when modern life is not lived by such an archaic restriction of the very transitory nature of language as its meanings ever evolve and expand.

Trayvon Martin was labeled a thug by many.

Not sure he had a history of domestic violence.

Open question: When a black man happens to be a thug, what word is acceptable to use to call him what he is?

"It's impossible to keep up with all of the 'dog-whistle' words that are no longer allowed to be used and not be labeled a racist."

Always remember Jeff.....when most folks are being called a "racist", it's because the weak hack of a poster has literally nothing left in their bag but a bunch of rocks with the word "racist" painted on it. The bag is otherwise empty......much like their head.

There is zero evidence Nulli has been a racist after posting here for many many years but he makes a comment about NFL players and BAM.....he's a racist. Why? because Snoofy, Moder8, and Tonyaroma have nothing else....they have nothing else. Hans made an appearance and he has it out for Nulli big time so if there was any evidence of this...Hans would definitely have posted it.

What's funny is that these hacks believe the label is way more powerful than it really is. Perhaps it's their own guilt. I don't know really and I certainly don't care.

Let them race bait when they are out of arguments thread to thread. It's comical.

From Tony's link.....

"Thugs, the word chosen by President Obama, Maryland's governor, Baltimore's mayor and others to describe those who looted and burned stores in Baltimore and in some cases that were later retracted with an apology. So why is thug so charged? John McWhorter has been thinking about this. He teaches linguistics at Columbia University"

So, Obama uses the word and so does Maryland's governor, both black, BTW.

But someone who teaches Linguistics at Columbia thinks it's a racist term. Fair enough but maybe Obama should hire John McWhorter as this escaped the dozens of folks who are responsible for advising Obama on what to say and how to say it. Maybe it's not so "mainstream" accepted that "thug" is a racist term as McWhorter suggests. If it were, then I imagine a bright person like Obama wouldn't have used it.

My point is that Obama and the governor of Maryland have hoards of folks to advise them on the use of words and they used the word "thug" anyway.

But they get a pass on being called a racist but Nulli doesn't. He's a racist for using it on one single thread.

And you ---- for brain posters have the gall to say you're not racebaiting?

You're nothing but racebaiters.

Live with it.

The rappers appropriated and commandeered "thug" thinking they would define the parameters of its use like the word gay was subtracted from its ancient meaning, but we make a stand here and insist upon our right to call a thug a thug.
