Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A Financial Times journalist was killed by a crocodile while washing his hands at a lagoon in Sri Lanka during a holiday with pals. Paul McClean, 25, an Oxford University graduate, is understood to have wandered away from his group of friends to find a toilet when he was attacked. The British victim is believed to have been dragged under water at a lagoon called Crocodile Rock near a popular surf spot after being ambushed by the reptile.

McClean graduated from Oxford with a First class honors degree in French in 2015 before joining the Financial Times later that year.

He had covered Brexit and the European Union for the newspaper and had recently returned to London after living in Brussels for a couple of months.

The lagoon, known to be crawling with crocodiles, is yards away from popular surf spot Elephant Rock near Arugam Bay on the southeast coast.

Hahahahahaha.... this is the funniest thing I heard all week!

I shouldn't be laughing, but an Englishman in a jungle (the very last place an English person should be) getting eaten by a croc is... I can't explain it. It's Monty Pythonish.

Englishman; 'say, fellows, where can i go to freshen up a bit?'

Sri Lankans; 'just go over there to Croc rock. No, you'll be fine.'

Finding this funny is ridiculously childish.

"This is the first known crocodile attack in Sri Lanka."

This is a lie intended to protect their tourism business. If there are a lot of crocodiles around there have been attacks. Another story quotes a different local who admits this fact.

Sad end to a potentially great life. If they can find any body parts, what will they play at his funeral?

A more complete description of what happened...

Financial Times journalist is killed in crocodile attack on surfing vacation in Sri Lanka
www.washingtonpost.com

...Lafeer, who was about 10 feet away at the time, suddenly heard a fisherman screaming. He ran to the muddy lagoon, where a fisherman told him a crocodile had dragged a tourist -- McClean -- underwater. For a fleeting moment, Lafeer saw an arm reaching out of the water, he told The Post.

"At the last minute, we saw the fingers," he said. "We tried to find the body, we couldn't."

After Lafeer and the fisherman failed to rescue McClean, they called local authorities. Arugam Bay Police requested the help of the Sri Lankan Navy, which immediately rushed to the scene. But by the time the Navy reached the lagoon, it was past 5 p.m., and too dark to search the waters, Cmdr. Lankanatha Dissanayake, a spokesman for the Navy, told The Post.

On Friday morning, the Navy found a body in the lagoon, about 50 feet from the shore, and identified it as McClean's. It was intact, with wounds on his right leg below and above the knee, Dissanayake told The Post....

So he wasn't eaten, but it appears he was drowned.

He told the croc he was white and off limits.

Nobody listens.

Can't help it, mate. I wish I could.

It is what it is.

They found his body later. The crocodile had buried it intact. There's speculation that the crocodile was protecting nearby offspring.

Well they would if you had any.
Obviously you just fell off the turnip lorry.

Lol

Turnip lorry, indeed....

The biggest difference between an Englishman and myself (besides the obvious TEXAS thing) is that I at least know not to poop on any place called Croc Rock.

I don't mind being eaten now and then but not by a croc.

I remember when rock was young. Me and Suzie had so much fun. Holding hands and skimming stones. Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own. But the biggest kick I ever got was washing my hands down at Crocodile Rock. While the other kids were rocking round the clock, I was bleeding and drowning at the Crocodile Rock...

That ranks right up there with going on "holiday" in Pakistan. Who the hell goes to Sri Lanka to vacation? Only white liberals who want to seem exotic in their stories.

ROTFLMAO.

You saying you are from Texas is about the dumbest and funniest thing ever.

You are jealous!

Well, I'm going to go get some seekh kebabs anyways. It's one of the most delicious parts of living in the most multicutural city in the US.

Ha! You used the proper spelling!

Here is what I do with the leftovers the next morning.... cut them up and cook them in scrabbled eggs.

Best breakfast ever!
