Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, August 18, 2017

Three plaques commemorating Confederate soldiers were removed Friday morning from Riverfront Park in downtown Daytona Beach, less than a day after Mayor Derrick Henry told a [Daytona] News-Journal reporter that such memorials should be removed from city property. Two of the plaques contained the names of soldiers from east Volusia County who fought for the South in the Civil War. The other plaque was part of a small monument, and attached to a rectangular pink stone next to a larger memorial for soldiers from all wars. That plaque was dedicated in 1955 by "Southern Citizens of Daytona Beach" in memory of area Confederate soldiers.

Chill out drama queen. You are welcome to go see these little plaques after they are installed at the Halifax Historical Museum.

I would have no problem with memorials to honor the fallen draftees as long as they were recognized as the victims of the slave owning aristocracy that started the Civil War. Because that is what they were.

Do you all finally get it now?

Even when you win, you still lose.

Right wingers pushed their racist hate filled agenda. And overwhelming numbers of Americans pushed back. Say good bye to all those statues and plaques honoring the Confederacy. We now all recognize them for the implicit symbols of modern day hate they really represent.

No tell it like it is. America lost its ever loving mind. Funny noone said a damned thing about those Statues and Monuments until Dylan Roof. Let's be honest. It's an emotional reaction to bad behavior nothing more.

No, it's a re-evaluation of something most of us never bothered to understand within its complete context. People are learning why these Confederate memorializations exist, why the people were memorialized in the first place considering their role in having committed sedition against the United States in furtherance of owning other people.

And masses of white Americans are marching and counterprotesting that today's America is not the same one as the America that thought such memorializations were alright in public places supported by the tax dollars of everyone, not just Confederate apologists or nostalgists. It is the right of citizens to make these determinations through their government and representatives, and that is what is happening. The people are speaking and government is listening.

"Funny noone said a damned thing about those Statues and Monuments until Dylan Roof."

Not true at all.
You are living a revisionist history.

"Southern Citizens of Daytona Beach"

Blatantly anti-American.
Should never have been allowed in the first place, simply out of taste.

This is false. There were calls to remove Confederate memorials and flags in the South for decades.

Just because you're not aware of something doesn't mean it didn't happen.
