Iran's parliament has voted in favour of boosting investment in its missile defence and foreign operations programmes by more than $500m (£386m).

The bill, which received overwhelming approval, is in response to the latest round of US sanctions against Tehran.

The Iranian legislation must pass a second vote before submission for final approval.

Iranian MPs shouted "death to America" after Speaker Ali Larijani announced the result of the vote.

The bill was meant to counter Washington's "terrorist and adventurist activities" in the Middle East, AFP news agency reports.

The 27-point bill will also impose sanctions on US military and intelligence officials in the region.

So instead of an ordinary slingshot, they decided to make a slingshot with a wrist brace.... accompanied by the usual "death to America".

Congress putting additional sanctions on Iran was first against the agreement we made with them to give up their nuclear program and secondly is had nothing to do with foreign policy. It was just red meat for the dumbest members of the Trump base.

Putting those pallets of small bills of Euros and German currency to good use. Where did that money come from? Who flew it there and why did the hostages get released soon after it arrived? Any help with these questions would be appreciated.

There is no link, it's all a view the right wing embellished from a couple points of truth.

Donald Trump's Mostly False claim that $400 million payment to Iran was 'ransom'

In reality, the United States owed Iran $400 million as part of a longstanding dispute, and negotiators used that pending settlement as leverage to release the detained Americans. Experts said this kind of exchange is standard issue in U.S.-Iran relations over the past few decades.

The important but subtle nuance is this: While settling the $400 million helped ensure that the prisoners got home, it wasn't an illicit payment. Iran, according to the claim adjudicators, had a legitimate right to the money.

"While there is no connection between the $400 million and the return of our American citizens, we did, however, in those endgame hours, hold back that payment until we knew that our Americans were safe and sound and on their way out of Iran, because, in the very last few hours, Iran was playing a few games here on us," said State Department spokesman John Kirby in an Aug. 19 PBS interview.

n reality, the United States owed Iran $400 million

So naturally, our government would fly pallets of foreign currency in the middle of the night on an unmarked plane just prior to a prisoner release because all of this was obviously above the table. / snark

That's the best way to move large sums of money ANYWHERE. Under the cover of darkness in an nondescript vessel or vehicle. Only an idiot would transfer that much currency in broad daylight with a vehicle stating we are transporting money. Please rob us.

That was a solid and humorous response, Laura.

Well done.
