Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Even before the latest escalation of nuclear threats between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un's North Korea, senior diplomats and officials from the US's European allies have been warning that the US president's approach to world affairs is extremely dangerous -- pointing to his apparent ignorance of other countries' history, his unfiltered use of social media, and the lack of a strong, experienced team around him.

"He has no historical view. He is only dealing with these issues now, and seems to think the world started when he took office," a diplomat told BuzzFeed News, pointing to Trump's remarks and tweets about defense spending. "He thinks that NATO existed only to keep the communists out of Europe. He has a similar attitude in Asia-Pacific with Japan, ignoring that the US basically wrote their constitution." ...

They also believe Trump's foreign policy is chiefly driven by an obsession with unraveling Barack Obama's policies. "It's his only real position," one European diplomat said. "He will ask: 'Did Obama approve this?' And if the answer is affirmative, he will say: 'We don't.' He won't even want to listen to the arguments or have a debate. He is obsessed with Obama."

He's behaving exactly the way they want him to. Realize that the price of oil would shoot up immediately if can only find an excuse for another war. His boy friend Vlad would be very happy.

Globalization is important for our economy and national security, whether the conservative is capable of understanding so or not.

Trump does fine with neoconfederates as well as neoconservatives.

You are confusing those of us that want proper and humane immigration laws with wanting "open borders" which is fallacious.

Eurocrats don't give a damn about trump, the more he weakens the US the more power he lends to Eurocrats.

It's like having the fictional Stephen Colbert's idiot brother in the oval office.

Have you noticed who's in power? Who he appoints? Gorsuch's rulings from the bench?

He's a gift to these people. A man who is a landlord. He contributes nothing to this world.

Dangerous to humans who breathe air and aren't impervious to nuclear explosions.

Yes neocons and globalists suck, but you have allowed your hatred of them to blind you to the fact that trump is much much worse.

He is only dealing with these issues now, and seems to think the world started when he took office," a diplomat told BuzzFeed News, pointing to Trump's remarks and tweets about defense spending. "He thinks that NATO existed only to keep the communists out of Europe."

This guy needs to learn a little history, that is one of three reasons, according to Lord Ismay, the first Secretary General of NATO:

Lord Hastings Lionel Ismay was NATO's first Secretary General, a position he was initially reluctant to accept. By the end of his tenure however, Ismay had become the biggest advocate for the organisation he famously said was created to "keep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."
The main reason that the European Diplomats hate Trump is that he is now getting partial credit for forcing NATO countries under the 2% limit to increase their military spending:
While other US Presidents have complained that other NATO members have not paid their fair share, Trump has made boosting allied defense spending a central plank of his engagement with the transatlantic alliance.

But now for the first time in years, a sixth country, Romania, has joined the ranks of NATO members who spend 2% of their country's GDP on defense. Romania now joins the US, Greece, the UK, Estonia and Poland in meeting that NATO defense spending target.

Several other countries have also made major jumps in defense spending, with Latvia and Lithuania now projected to increase what they spend from about 1.4% of GDP in 2016 to over 1.7% in 2017. Both Baltic nations are expected to reach the 2% target by 2018.

Experts see concerns about Russia as the principle driving factor behind increasing defense budgets. But NATO officials have also credited Trump with drawing attention to the issue.

"I welcome the focus of the President on increased defense spending. At the same time, it's important to understand that this is implementation of a decision we all made together," Stoltenberg said at a news conference Wednesday in advance of Thursday's meeting of alliance defense ministers.

Romania and Greece, do they even have a gdp. My dad has traveled the world. He was in Romania a few years back. Said it was the poorest place he'd ever been. A friend of mines father lives on a pension of $450 a year. Thank goodness he can send him a few bucks.

Why should we care about some effeminate euro-trash who are so damn superior in intellect they plunged the world into war twice in less than 50 years? Any security they have has been paid for them by a country they consider uncultured backwards and primitive. I would like to give Putin NATO with a bow on it. We are gutting used by Europe like a cheep whore. Let those arrogant bastards pay for their own defense. We could save over 500 billion doing so.

"I would like to give Putin NATO with a bow on it"

And you expect us to take you seriously? What a total idiot. NATO nations spend billions on weapons and armies because of the threat of Putin and Russia, which he proved was real with his incursion and annexation of Crimea. If you think Putin is your friend you are sadly mistaken. It is quite doubtful that any world leader who came out of the KGB is a friend to any nation, even Russia. The most evil man in the world? I can't judge that competition, but he's right up there in the running.

Trump supporters like Trump because he, unlike Obama and others, doesn't make them feel stupid and insecure. This rant about the arrogance and intellectual superiority of "effeminate euro-trash" is Exhibit A.

#16 | Posted by danni Why should the security and welfare of Europe be the responsibility of the United States? Putin is just an other Russian ruler and he is brutal and bloody because that is the nature of Russia. Remember, the Russians admit to a murder rate four times that of the United States. The are backwards, zenophonic and unbelievably corrupt. But in the final tally, Russia is not our responsibility. I would not care if Putin started purges that rivaled Stalin. The fact is we, the United States are paying for the defense of countries that are not our allies. They would not lift a finger to come to our aid if we needed them as France and Germany repetitively prove. With a debt totaling 20 trillion and growing, it might be wise to set some priorities. I doubt you would feel secure if the economy imploded here. If the Europeans are not willing to defend themselves, why should we?

Meh. Name one person who is a media fixture across any industry and I can find enough people who have bad things to say about him/her to write an article like this. This is just journalists trying to keep their jobs. Of course, Trump is an incredibly easy target.

Had we not defended Europe and much of the rest of the world in the 1940's we'd likely be speaking German now.

And if we allow NK to take over SK, a defense treaty with us is worthless.

#21 | Posted by Corky, Actually we did not defend Europe, Hitler had completely over run the entire continent except for Britain by 1941. If Hitler had not invaded Russia, the Nazis would still be in power. They would have probity gotten away with a couple of genocides just like Stalin and the Turks did. If Britain had fell we would be crippled to assault Europe and more than likely would not. But that is conjecture.
My modest proposal is to remove all US troops from Korea. The South would win any engagement with the north, even if the north used non conventional weapons. Our ace in the hole is the mobility of our Armed Forces. We can effectively double the combat strength of the ROK forces within three days. Even the Chinese would think twice entering the fray. I actually doubt we would use any nucs on the north, It does not have many good targets. A show town and a bunch of worn down and poor towns living hand to mouth. Besides conventional weapons have become much more effective. Bunker used to be effective protection, it isn't anymore. I have seen where our bombs have cut through a hardened bunker at least 20 feet thick. The contents burned for a month. I have seen where an underground facility built built into a mountain was hit by a bomb they literally put through the door. We would decapitate their leadership the first day.
