Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Donald Trump announced his support last week for a new "merit-based" immigration bill that would screen visa applicants using a point system. The Republican-backed proposal, which would significantly reduce the number of people allowed to legally immigrate to America, would weigh each person's age, education, English ability, job offer salary, investments and even whether the person has an Olympic medal.

The Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment Act, or RAISE Act, favors people between the ages of 26 and 30 with a doctorate, high English proficiency and a job offer with a high salary. Applicants would need at least 30 points to be eligible to apply for a visa under the proposal, and the fastest way to get there is to have received a Nobel Prize or comparable international award, which gives applicants a head start of 25 points. Applicants with the highest number of points would go to the front of the line to receive visas.

If Trump had his way and it became law, here's how you would fare if you were trying to immigrate to the U.S. under the restrictions.

I would like all Trump voters to take this test.
It will be funny.

I don't qualify. Now if only Trump could somehow find a way to kick me out...

It is clear Melania would not qualify. But then again she was here illegally in the first place.

But in Trump's world, rules are for other people.

Yeah, sure!

So now I don't even qualify to be an American according to Trump and the Trumpets?

Trump is an ---- idiot.

And some of you idiot supporters still wonder why there is so much resistance to your goofy ideas about what it means to be an American and what makes America Great.

Apparently. In order to be a valid candidate to get a visa to come to America.

You must be a noble prize winner. A gold medal Olympian. And plan to invest over 1.3 million in our economy.

So. How many applicants are we left with?

They should give points for having a good grade point average, for having started a business, for having won a math science or spelling contest

Trump hires only unskilled minimum wage workers. He recently ran an ad for such US workers for 2 days in a small Florida paper near Mara-Lago. He doesn't intend to hire them. Instead he shows the ad to government officials as proof he can't find "qualified" Americans to fill the vacancies, in order to get H1-B visas for Eastern Europeans.

And? Was it this draconian? Nope. Merit based versus what Trump is putting out are two very different things.

I don't qualify. Would trump's alleged net worth offset his zero in the "speaks English" portion?

#23 | Posted by IndianaJones at 2017-08-09 05:22 PM | Reply | Funny: 1

I qualified, but with only a 2 point margin. This is similar to the rules to immigrate into Switzerland. There you can pay a lump sum if you want them to essentially leave you alone WRT your foreign income and holdings. You'd basically be paying for your social benefits.

This is the thread where the same people who usually say the US should be like the other industrialized economies will insist that we shouldn't be like the other industrialized economies.

It's pretty sad that a foreign postdoc (would have a PhD from a foreign institution) that is my age (34) with excellent English wouldn't have enough points to come here. They'd be one point short because salaries of postdoctoral positions aren't above $78K.

Great idea, Trump. At least there will be less postdocs vying for the slashed funding.

#26 | Posted by jpw at 2017-08-09 11:58 PM | Reply

Maybe the reason the salaries for postdoc positions aren't above $78k is that there are so many foreigners doing the work for less money.

In other news, agricultural workers in the US don't make a lot of money either picking berries. Wonder why.

Just as long as Donald Trump can still import workers for Mara Lago and Ivanka Trump can import her fashion items from China.

The list of individuals banned from coming to this country is fairly long They include, Communist, Anarchist, Nazis, Fascist, French, English, Germans, Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Jews and the list goes on. They were Banned for different reasons at different times. Adams and Jefferson were the first to do so. Trump is the most recent. But he didn't, about 95% of the Muslim world was not affected. Local governments have done this more often than the federal.

"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

No matter what anybody might say, NO one can put down America as much as Don does on a nearly daily basis. ie telling Mitch to get to work on stuff he himself wants so much but can't be bothered with some light lifting (friggin malingerer). Or thanking Putin for expelling staff.

Not if you keep up the xenophobia.

In reality you hate America. You only love our symbols, military, and wealth but you hate American people and values. We aren't "putting down America", afterall your side are the ones claiming America isn't great.
