Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

As a new parent, Jack Gilbert got a lot of different advice on how to properly look after his child: when to give him antibiotics or how often he should sterilize his pacifier, for example. After the birth of his second child, Gilbert, a scientist who studies microbial ecosystems at the University of Chicago, decided to find out what's actually known about the risks involved when modern-day children come in contact with germs. "It turned out that most of the exposures were actually beneficial," Gilbert says. "So that dirty pacifier that fell on the floor -- if you just stick it in your mouth and lick it, and then pop it back in little Tommy's mouth, it's actually going to stimulate their immune system. Their immune system's going to become stronger because of it."

That's why I serve uncooked chicken. Builds up the resistance to salmonella.

Louis Pasteur was just a hypochondriac.

For me, the only thing worse than drinking raw milk is drinking milk in the first place. Babies need milk, for adults it is just an artery clogger.

I've been preaching this and preaching this here for YEARS That's why Raw Milk doesn't phase me a bit. You skittish germaphobes make yourselves sick.

While I agree with the germ idea, and even raw milk for tikes, I have to agree with Danni, milk as an adult is an artery clogger.

May I suggest this video for an interesting overview, saw this just the other nite, fascinating. .....

Raw milk doesn't phase you because you're pretending there's no serious health risk. Recommending it to others is incredibly irresponsible -- particularly children. I hope no one suffers because they took your advice.

Here's two stories from the CDC about what happened to children when their families gave them raw milk:

www.cdc.gov

A nine-year-old girl got an E coli infection that caused multiple organ failure.

A seven-year-old boy got an E coli infection that caused hemolytic-uremic syndrome, kidney failure and required three years of recovery.

Drinking raw milk is like licking your hands after visiting a petting zoo. Yum!

Anecdotally, it just always seems that the people who live in the unhealthiest environments have the strongest immunities to common illnesses.

Not remotely true. The people WHO SURVIVE INTO ADULTHOOD are the ones who were born with stronger constitutions. The population as a whole is no different from place to place. The reason you find healthier adults when you visit those places is that ALL THE NORMAL PEOPLE GOT SICK AND DIED in childhood. The mortality rates in those places are much higher than in clean cities.

Wondering which is cleaner/safer to taste: petting zoo hands, raw milk, or perianal sweat?
