Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, July 12, 2017

Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer blasted Republicans defending President Trump's eldest son on Tuesday, comparing Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer to attempting to receive stolen goods. "They were saying for six months, we didn't do it, there's no evidence that we did it ... Now they're saying, yeah we did it, but it wasn't so bad and we were incompetent at it. That's not a very good defense," Krauthammer, a Fox News contributor, said on the network. "If you get in a car to go to a certain place in the middle of the night to pick up stolen goods, and it turns out the stolen goods don't show up but the cops show up, I think you're going to have a very weak story saying 'I got swindled here,'" he said.

"I defended them, because up until today there was no 'there' there," he said. "Well now there is a 'there.'"

"The denial of collusion is very weak right now because it looks as if Don Jr. was receptive to receiving this information," he concluded.

Potential quid pro quo for Don Jr's meeting with Russian lawyer and another reason for Preet Bharara's firing:

JUDICIARY DEMS DEMAND ANSWERS ON DOJ SETTLEMENT OF FRAUD CASE HANDLED BY RUSSIAN LAWYER WHO MET WITH TRUMP JR.

Jul 12, 2017

DOJ Abruptly Settled Money Laundering Case that Involved Russia Sanctions, New York Real Estate Holdings, and Kremlin-Linked Lawyer Who Met with Donald Trump Jr.
Today, all seventeen Democratic members of the House Committee on the Judiciary wrote to Attorney General Jeff Sessions to request information about his decision to abruptly settle United States v. Prevezon Holdings Ltd, a money laundering case that the Department of Justice (DOJ) abruptly settled that involved Russia sanctions, New York real estate holdings, and the lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr.

In their letter, the Members wrote, "Last summer, Donald Trump, Jr. met with a Kremlin-connected attorney in an attempt to obtain information "that would incriminate Hillary." Earlier this year, on May 12, 2017, the Department of Justice made an abrupt decision to settle a money laundering case being handled by that same attorney in the Southern District of New York.[1] We write with some concern that the two events may be connected -- and that the Department may have settled the case at a loss for the United States in order to obscure the underlying facts."

In addition to the letter, House Judiciary Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr., issued the following statement:

"The connections here are too substantial to ignore. Why was a Russian money-laundering case involving more than $230 million dismissed without explanation? Why was a central figure in that case chosen to approach the Trump campaign about assistance from the Russian government? Was the firing of Preet Bharara in any way related to his office's prosecution of these crimes? Wittingly or unwittingly, was the Department of Justice involved?

"Even if these facts are mere coincidence -- and there is reason to be doubtful that they are mere coincidence -- they merit immediate explanation by the Attorney General and immediate investigation by the House Judiciary Committee."

"The connections here are too substantial to ignore."

Told ya'll so!

Trump got the real message from Jr's meeting; had the case dismissed, then fired the Manhattan Fed Atty who brought it. Putin paid off for his help in the election.

Looks like the smoking gun may still be firing bullets, eh? Definitely needs investigated. If Mueller wasn't on this before, he is now. Funny how both Kushner and Manafort forgot to mention this meeting until recently, huh?

From what I understand and in fairness there is not a lot of evidence of money laundering in his "typical" real estate deals (condos bought by say Russians at his properties) from what I understand. There are 2 glaring exceptions I am aware of off hand and they involve huuuuuuge deals...

1. His Florida Estate sold to Dmitry Rybolovlev
2. Trump Tower Azerbaijan (Ivanka oversaw that...)

I always knew that the Russians hacked our systems.

I was very concerned that Trump was even obstructing justice.

But, I actually really thought it was a stretch to think that Trump would be dumb enough to collude with the damn Russians to win the election.

Now I know I was being naive. Every worst case scenario we imagined about this crew seems to be getting verified.

Republicans: You can turn your Deflect-O-Matic up to 11, but the guy you nominated for president in 2016 was, is, and ever shall be, a scumbag, whose only interest is in himself and his very closest circle -- which explains why he had to hire his family to work for him. And the hammer is coming down, in more ways than one.

It doesn't sound like she was sitting with him but sitting near him because she took a "front-row seat":

Ms. Veselnitskaya has also met with members of Congress and helped to establish a Delaware nonprofit group that lobbied against the sanctions. She submitted lengthy testimony and organized a screening of an anti-Magnitsky film at Newseum in Washington in June 2016, just days after she met with Donald Trump Jr.

She also attended a congressional committee hearing on American policy toward Russia a day after the screening, taking a front-row seat.

Oh, sorry, she was sitting behind McFaul, not with or next to him:

The next day, June 14, Veselnitskaya was photographed sitting behind former U.S. ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing about "U.S. Policy Towards Putin's Russia."

Rohrabacher is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee whose hearing Akhmetshin and Veselnitskaya attended.

It occurs to me that Putin doesn't really care about Trump, he just wants to show the U.S. as a nation with a political system which is out of control, isn't believable in the outcomes of our elections. He just wants to make our democracy look like his. Donald Trump was the perfect character to carry out that plan, totally phony, totally corrupt, totally able to appeal to the parts of our population who need jobs so he promises jobs that he can't deliver. Donald Trump ran on jobs, pretty soon poor America is going to be asking, "so where are those coal mine jobs you promised?" The working poor who elected him are going to end up hating him.

"When you get information that the Russians want to dig dirt on your opponent and give it to you, and support you in your election, you go to the FBI, you don't go to the meeting."
-Krauthammer

To be clear, the above quote is from neither Rachel Maddow nor Mika Brzezinski.

To those who offer that Don JR isn't part of the campaign, two things:

A) Both Jared Kushner (current member of WH staff and then campaign adviser) and Paul Manafort (then campaign chair) also attended the meeting
B) Don Jr is divorced from current operations in the same way that Ivanka tries to "stay out of politics" (quote from Fox and Friends [natch] on 6/26/17...that would be after accepting an office in the WH, but before sitting in for the POTUS at the G-20)

There were multiple meetings

She was lobbying Republicans in Congress about overturning the Magnitsky Act, an act which was passed with bipartisan support and signed by Obama in December, 2012. She even brought with her a Russian made anti-Magnitsky Act film, so it's not like the Obama administration let her in for the purpose of attending those meetings and trying to undercut the act. She was let in for the reason Et_Al stated.

"She was lobbying Republicans in Congress about overturning the Magnitsky Act,"

Which Don Jr. referred to as if the meeting were about adoptions which are only related to the Magnitsky Act because Putin cut off American adoptions of Russian orphans as punishment for passing the Act which was passed to punish Russians who are involved in the murder of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who had committed the "crime" of exposing fraud within the Russian tax office.

Much to his credit, yes it was Obama who pushed through the Magnitsky Act, and much to their shame Trump is dealing with this Russian lawyer who is trying to get the Magnitsky Act repealed. You should know that other nations are also passing their own versions of the Magnitsky Act as a response to the Russians, under Putin's direction, murder of Mr. Magnitsky. But how long was her permission to be in the U.S. granted?
