President Trump is preparing to announce new restrictions on travel and trade with Cuba, backtracking on the policy of greater engagement with the island pushed by his predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump will not go so far as to sever diplomatic ties with Havana or shutter the U.S. embassy that reopened there in 2015. But he will impose new limits on commercial transactions that involve the Cuban military. And Americans will no longer be allowed to travel to the island on their own for "people-to-people" purposes, once the new rules are in place.

The new restrictions were championed by Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, two Cuban-American lawmakers from South Florida. Both men plan to be on hand when Trump announces the changes in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, Friday afternoon. Rubio will accompany the president on Air Force One.

White House officials describe the policy change as fulfilling a promise Trump made to Florida's Cuban exile community last fall.

Although Trump lost the Miami area to Hillary Clinton by double digits, he credits support from Cuban-Americans for helping him eke out a narrow victory statewide.

The policy changes won't take effect immediately, so Americans with plans to travel to Cuba in the near future won't be affected. But as soon as new regulations are drafted by the Treasury and Commerce Departments, they're likely to pour cold water on the burgeoning Cuban travel business.

I guess the Cuban resorts will have some sales on soon. Good thing I have two passports.

Not sure Trump should go to Little Havana, for safety's sake. He's not real popular there, and they really love baseball and guns.

When you do the same thing over and over for 50 FREAKING YEARS and expect different results it's the definition of bat ---- crazy. AKA Trump.

I guess all those vintage automobiles have now been deemed a threat.

Would not be surprised to find out that he was unable to develop some property there.

Although Trump does seem to have developed an affinity antiquated and failed right wing polices of the past so this could also just big one of his typical turds of a move.

And benefit his hotel business.

It is situations such as this that I'm glad that I can travel on my Swiss passport.

Even after getting elected, trump has obama-inferiority-complex. He'll never get over the fact that the black guy was so much better and more admired than he is, so he has to throw a tantrum and undo as many of obama's policies as possible, even if it serves zero purpose and hurts people in the process.

well Danni, I guess you are not getting the point. We are not expecting different results

That's not a bug, that's a feature.

I don't know what this accomplishes.

Changing our Cuba policy was one of the few things Obama did that I agreed with.

This had much more to do with just nullifying Obama edicts than anything to do with our actual policy towards Cuba. It's a personality conflict not a foreign policy decision. But then we're dealing with Trump, why would we expect better? Trump is a douche bag, the sooner America actually recognizes that the better, unfortunately most of the rest of the world already has. He makes me embarrassed to be an American.

"I don't know what this accomplishes."

It proves he keeps his promises bigly.
If he's running for re-election in 2020, you will be reminded.
It's also a thing he can do that doesn't really do much, sort of like withdrawing from Paris.

It's like when you find something menial to keep busy at work so the boss doesn't think you're just idling, so she won't task you to wrap the silverware inside the paper napkins, and that's the worst.
