Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A tiny island in the Pacific Ocean classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site contains 38 million pieces of trash, researchers recently discovered to their dismay. Most of the garbage that washed ashore on Henderson Island -- halfway between Chile and New Zealand -- is plastic, including toys, cigarette lighters, toothbrushes, plastic bottles and hundreds of hard hats. The island is located in the South Pacific gyre, a vortex of ocean currents that accumulates floating trash. Researcher Jennifer Lavers said, "The quantity of plastic there is truly alarming. It's both beautiful and terrifying. ... We need to drastically rethink our relationship with plastic. It's something that's designed to last forever, but is often only used for a few fleeting moments and then tossed away."

If you goto Henderson Island via google maps and look at photos. You see that most of the garbage on the island is not consumer goods but fishing and vessel odds and ends.

You also see more images of various pristine beaches.

38Million seems like a high number if you look at the images most images are pristine, the few of garbage couldn't be more than 500 items.

I would be interested if the article actually showed images rather than just mentioning it.

Are they lying? I don't know, but I am skeptical.

Anyhow enjoy google maps photos it looks like a wonderful place to take my sailboat once I get the new sail Trump promised me.

Whew! I feel SO much better knowing that Andrea is looking out for the environment for us.... while she waits for the Trumpublicans to cut enough children's programs to buy her a new sailboat.

@#3 If you goto Henderson Island via google maps and look at photos....

The link you posted didn't work for me.

The photos in the cited article show plastic debris strewn on the beaches. It also noes that some debris was buried.

...She said she sometimes found herself getting mesmerized by the variety and colors of the plastic that litters the island before the tragedy of it would sink in again.

Lavers and six others stayed on the island for 3½ months in 2015 while conducting the study. They found the trash weighed an estimated 17.6 tons and that more than two-thirds of it was buried in shallow sediment on the beaches....

It wouldn't surprise me if the findings were correct, or close to correct. Do a google search for "plastic whirlpool in the pacific" and see what comes up...

Or.. let me google that for you...
