Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

LOS ANGELES -- Hundreds of federal and local law enforcement fanned out across Los Angeles in pre-dawn sweeps, serving arrest and search warrants as part of a three-year investigation into the ultra-violent street gang MS-13. [...]

Acting U.S. Attorney Sandra Brown said the 127-page anti-racketeering indictment targets 44 members and associates of the gang, including the one-time leader of a Los Angeles faction of MS-13.

Twenty-one people named in the indictment were arrested in pre-dawn raids across Los Angeles and Brown said warrants were served at more than 50 locations. Jail officials around the region also conducted cell searches, as some of those indicted were already in custody on unrelated charges. About a dozen of those arrested were so-called "shot callers" for the gang. At least three people were still at large Wednesday.

"It's one of the largest and most entrenched gangs in Los Angeles," Brown said. "Today's actions will deal a critical blow to the top leadership."

The bears are repeating: "Our sanctuary policies...are what make us successful here because we get people to talk, we get witnesses to come forward." -- Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck

Criminology literature supports the above statement as does this incident that now stands as exhibit A. In terms of illegal immigration, much (if not most) crime committed by illegals is done so upon other illegals, which clearly makes sense. Should an illegal victimize a citizen, the chances of that citizen reporting the crime and the illegal are far greater than victimizing another illegal. The perception by illegals that law enforcement in non-sanctuary cities will deport said illegals for just making contact with law enforcement is very, very common. Hence, these victims who are here illegally do not report these crimes, which are often connected. So law enforcement in these cities do not have the benefit of information provided by victims who are illegals. Los Angeles, like other sanctuary cities, DOES take advantage of this benefit, as shown here in this gang bust.

Arguably the biggest step forward in removing MS-13 from American streets was conducted in the largest sanctuary city in the U.S. and the police chief specifically gave credit to the exact sanctuary city policy that the Right has been trouncing for years. Oh. The. Sweet. Irony.

My interest in this story is tied to the Chief's comments (shown in the video and NOT reported by ANY written news source I could find at this point in time...making me even more interested and curious).

But I couldn't pass up on using the "B. Hussein" whistle one last time.

You mean treating a whole group of people like the few bad apples within doesn't help catch the bad apples?
Nobody knew law enforcement and counter terrorism was so complicated.

Sort of like a Muslim ban that is being examined by the SC that they are trying to pretend Trump never said. But he did. One way to deal with every gang in Chicago, or wherever else, just shoot everyone between the ages of 16 and 30. That'll fix it.

Great, now you've got your man(?) in office. Fix it.

Oh, I forgot, this is happening here, not in Moscow.

Waiting....

(for reference, raping a new person is not 'fixing' anything.)

And PUtin, the great authoritarian, does he prevent gangs in Moscow. No. They have the same problems we do, only worse.

So you are happy there was a BIG gang bust in a sanctuary city and want to brag about it?

How do you think the gang got so big in the sanctuary city in the first place?

The idiocy is astounding.

Geez, not even a little praise for LAPD stepping up and doing what Trump promised to do?

It's the largest city right next to the border, Mackris. Sanctuary city factor may be significant, but far less significant than the size and location of the city.

Now, what's clearly significant in FIGHTING these thugs is the method in which they were found. That method is greatly significant and FAR more capable in sanctuary cities.

That's idiocy? LAPD police chief is an idiot? Keep in mind, again, his department succeeded in progressing one of Trumps goals, more so than anyone else in the country. And you're calling him an idiot. Says a lot about you, Mackris.

I represented an MS-13 members in a murder trial. What was interesting was how work-a-day his attitude was toward the killing. A stranger from a rival gang he had never met before. It really was no big deal to him one way or another. Just something that was expected of him. Sometimes, with some of these genuinely tough individuals, you get the feeling that they actually accept that death is just a part of life. On the other hand, he lost his father and 2 brothers in Guatemala in the '80s and '90s during the civil war. Just a different mind set.

Ever seen "West Side Story" Andrea, did that take place in a sanctuary city? You're equating gang violence with sanctuary city and it is b***s**t. Do they have gang violence in Chicago" Is Moscow a sanctuary city?

#11 | Posted by danni at 2017-05-18 12:13 PM | Reply

The gang got so big because hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing civil wars in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua flooded into SoCal in the '80s. Displaced people who were treated and looked down upon as outsiders. Their own language, their own culture, their own extremely violent background. Mara Salvatrucha was perhaps an inevitability.

I worked for a period at the Immigrants Rights Office in downtown Los Angeles, and we were flooded with asylum requests from people from that region. And most applicants did end up getting some form of relief. I am amazed at how little most Americans know about the blood shed and strife that inundated Central America back in the Reagan years.

You're not big on comprehension, are you? Did you read the article, and discover the fact it was a SC actually aided in these arrests, or was that too much for you?

statement refers to leftists desire to create more sanctuary cities and allow present ones to continue...A COMPLETE AND UNDENIABLE OFFENSE TOWARDS THE RULE OF FEDERAL LAW.......AS WELL AS.....a certifiable fact....

then there is the analogy, the correct analogy, of break into the country ? ..become a citizen... break into your house ??.....then they're family.....unless you're in the segment of hypocrites like Streisand and any other celeb in their multi room mansions..

the comprehension deficiency is not on this end.

"Police and sheriff's departments in Texas are decrying an immigration bill passed by the state legislature, saying it will drive a wedge between law enforcement and immigrant communities.

The bill in question, known as S.B. 4, passed the Texas Senate Wednesday, and Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is expected to sign it.

The measure includes provisions that would ban "sanctuary cities" in the state and force officers to ask the immigration status of every individual they detain, while enacting fines on police that refuse to comply with the law."

If you want law enforcement then you don't want to cause people to be afraid to call the police.

It was gang activity in the 1950's indicating that we have always had gang activity for my entire life. Could have just as easily have mentioned "Gangs of New York" which illustrates gang activity from an even earlier era.

I know what you were getting at, I just thought West Side Story was a funny example.

MS-13 is more violent than traditional street gangs and they are international. They're more of a drug cartel that runs a street gang for recruiting purposes.

Blaming their presence here on Obama is pretty stupid.

Who's doing that? Did I miss something? The only thing Obama should be blamed for is starting the anti-racketeering investigation against MS-13 and their likes that led to this bust.

Question is now, can other sanctuary cities take advantage of the same methods and variables that the LAPD did in tracking down the MS-13 elements in their communities. If this is proven to be true, considering Trumps railing against both MS-13 and sanctuary cities, the irony just might break the Retort.

Sort of like a Muslim ban that is being examined by the SC ...

None of the travel ban cases have reached the Supreme Court stage. The issue about what Trump said is whether his "alligator mouth" trumps what the EO actually says. Seems consensus says the language of the order properly prevails over his mouth.

The bill in question, known as S.B. 4, passed the Texas Senate ... force[s] officers to ask the immigration status of every individual they detain ...

No, the bill does no such thing. Read the bill instead of what some reporter says it says. www.capitol.state.tx.us
