The French Tennis Federation denied Maria Sharapova a wild card entry for the French Open on Tuesday, citing a need to "protect the game" following Sharapova's doping scandal. Federation president Bernard Giudicelli said, "I decided not to give a wild card. Nobody can deprive her of her two titles here and I'm very sorry for Maria. I'm very sorry for her fans. ... She had committed a violation of the tennis program and had to be suspended for 15 months. Today this is over, she can take her path. But if there can be a wild card for people returning from injuries, there cannot be a wild card for players returning from doping."

Sharapova was unfairly caught in the middle of a doping rule change. She was not engaged in taking a drug secretly and hiding the fact. It was a drug she reported using which was legal at one point and then declared illegal. The ban is unreasonably long and likely to finish her competitive career. Unfortunately for her, international politics are in play here.

This decision was unfair, they hate her because she is beautiful.

Damn shame that politics makes it's way into pretty much everything. Giudicelli is a politician with an agenda. Letting her in would be tantamount to admitting the Federation was wrong.

I don't think this decision was unreasonable but the suspension was.

And the grandstanding by one of her competitors and the way ESPN covered it last week was ridiculous given the nature of her violation.

Calling her beautiful is like saying the grand canyon is a ditch.

Always excuses.

If nothing else, predictable.
