Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, April 18, 2017

As worries deepened last week about whether North Korea would conduct a missile test, the White House declared that ordering an American aircraft carrier into the Sea of Japan would send a powerful deterrent signal and give President Trump more options in responding to the North's provocative behavior. The problem was, the carrier, the Carl Vinson, and the four other warships in its strike force were at that very moment sailing in the opposite direction, to take part in joint exercises with the Australian Navy in the Indian Ocean, 3,500 miles southwest of the Korean Peninsula.

The saga of the wayward carrier might never have come to light, had the Navy not posted a photograph on Monday of the Carl Vinson sailing through the Sunda Strait, which separates the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The picture was taken on Saturday, four days after the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, described its mission in the Sea of Japan.

Here's the Trump White House spreading a claim that one of our aircraft carriers is headed into a war zone at a time of enormous crisis and nobody in the building or the Pentagon figured out for four days that this wasn't true.

I wonder if the CHinese and Russian "spy ships" have found our carrier yet?

China and Russia dispatch ships to shadow Donald Trump's 'armada' as it approaches North Korean waters

...China and Russia have dispatched spy vessels to shadow Donald Trump's ‘armada' as it steams to North Korean waters, amid rising tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Japanese media reported the deployment as Mike Pence, the US vice president, warned Pyongyang the "era of strategic patience is over" during a visit to South Korea.

Beijing sought Russian help in averting a crisis over North Korea last week, as concerns grow in China that Donald Trump is seeking to confront North Korea over its weapon's program...

You're trying to convince people that we publicly lied about an aircraft carrier's location to trick Russia and China, then revealed the ruse in a Department of Defense photo on Monday?

The point of saying the carrier was headed towards Korea was to be show of force to put more pressure on Kim Jong-un.

Instead, it's a no-show of force. Impressive!

And why do you think we would be trying to trick China while working with them to rein in North Korea? What the hell would be the point of that -- a moment of back-slapping tomfoolery when Trump tells Xi Jinping and Xi is so shocked he spits out his beautiful chocolate cake?

There's a difference between hiding a military movement for strategic purposes and making a public claim about military movement to deter and intimidate an enemy while reassuring the world of our resolve.

We told the world the aircraft carrier was going to Korea. It wasn't. This doesn't put us at any advantage. It makes us look like we don't know what we're doing.

Explain the tactical benefit of saying an aircraft carrier is going to Korea for four days when it was headed somewhere else thousands of miles away.

The imaginary show of force didn't cause North Korea to do anything we want. We're still in the same situation we were when the carrier order was announced by Sean Spicer.

Not knowing those oceans there may have been a reason it did not turn sooner. A carrier does not turn on a dime without tugs. It takes many miles of ocean.

We also don't know what stores or fuel the Vinson and battle group may have needed. They may have been scheduled for an unrep (underway replenishment).

The Vinson will be on station soon.

This part of the article tends to support Prolix's position:

Privately, however, other officials expressed bewilderment that the Pentagon did not correct its timeline, particularly given the tensions surging in the region and the fact that Mr. Spicer, as well as the national security adviser, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, were publicly answering questions about it.

It's not like the Pentagon didn't know where it was given satellite tracking and instantaneous communications. It is strange that they let the Admin take the bullet on this, especially McMaster, who had to have known, as a former General, what the plan was.

Coupled with the fact that the Chinese and Russians were purportedly searching for it (even though they have their own satellites and a Carrier Group is hard to hide nowadays) this may have been deliberate by the Pentagon for whatever reason.

Your question ignores what we're discussing. Prolix thinks there's tactical advantage in lying for four days about an aircraft carrier going to Korea and then revealing the ruse in a Pentagon photo release. The failure of Kim Jong-un's missile launch has nothing to do with the carrier not being there.

It's amazing the calisthenics some of you perform to make a Trump administration blunder look like brilliant strategery. If it was actual calisthenics you'd be in great shape by now.

"Cai Jian, an expert from the Center for Korean Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, said the whole episode was part of an elaborate game of "psychological warfare or bluffing" by the United States, arguing that Washington never really intended to launch a military strike on North Korea right now.

"At the peak of the standoff, psychological warfare is very important," he said.

Ross Babbage, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for Strategic Budgetary Assessments, a Washington-based think tank that focuses on the military, said the move may be "military signaling" from the U.S.

"It's more than a bluff," he said. "A bluff suggests you're not serious. My understanding is that this U.S. administration is dead serious, it's been 40 years of trying to get the North Koreans to back away from the nuclear weapons."

Elements of the Vinson Task Force have likely been in place for days. The fact that the Carrier it's self hasn't made it there yet is pretty much irrelevant. They won't be the first tool used anyway. Most likely, they are un-repping the rest of the Task Force before they move into a potential hot zone. That's kind of how it works. You prepare for war before you might have to go to war.

Within the next few days, if we see firings at the Pentagon or at the top levels in that battle group then we will know Trump really didn't know where the fleet was and they didn't want him to know. I am sort of expecting that to be the outcome. I think some sane person decided to prevent a missile attack on our fleet because it is stupid to send it into missile range of N. Korea. If Kim could take out any American ship, much less and aircraft carrier, he would be incredibly proud of his achievement and the Russians and the Chinese are still there telling us we can't respond in kind or else risk WWIII. For Russia, war wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing because it would shrink the supply of oil while increasing demand and raise the price so that they aren't bleeding billions every month. China wants the U.S. to stop meddling in S.E. Asia and the sinking of any American war ship would make them happy too.

Wrong, you don't know the facts, just what you have been told by the media and now confirmed by the Pentagon, who knew where the Vinson was the entire time.

They attempted to fire a missile regardless of Trump's bluff.

Wrong again, Trump threatened action if they did the nuclear test, not fire a missle. NK didn't test the nuke as they had threatened to.

Nothing happened to them when they did.

Well, the missile did blow up after launch and the nuke test never happened.

And now it turns out the Navy isn't anywhere near NK. So they know it was total crap the entire time.

The Navy knew where the Vinson was but didn't correct the Administration's statements...why do you think they sat quiet?

What is funny about all the DR Left howling about this is that the CVN-76 group is based at Yokosuna Japan, which is 800 miles from Pyongyang, can steam into the Sea of Japan in about 10 hours and can launch from the harbor.

Probably has something to do with the name of the carrier...the USS Ronald Reagan.

If the Pentagon knew where they were and didn't tell the President it more than makes him look like a doofus, it makes him look like the not-Commander-in-Chief. It says he is no longer in charge of the military. It's virtually a coup. They may allow him to flounder around on domestic issues, etc. but it means they are no longer taking orders from him because he is crazeeeeeeee! I hate to say it, I really do, if that is the case I support the military on that. Don't put targets within striking distance of crazy dictators who want war to distract their starving populations and insure his continued reign of hunger on his people.

N. Korea has radar and they have allies with sattelites. They knew where the battle group was. This was not a deceptive move, it was a move to protect American ships from a lunatic and use defensive patience as it has been the smartest strategy. Now we need to enable it with huge pressure on China economically, if they let Kim threaten us or our ships then Chinese goods should be thrown in the ocean when they land on our docks. Kim Jung Un is of their creation, we need not to forget that little tidbit of history. Without Chinese involvement in the Korean war, and a China who we had fought for with Gen Chenault from around 1939 through the entirety of WWII, who we had sacrificed for, and they thanked us by backing the N. Korean side in the Korean War. They'd be speaking Japanese if it wasn't for us, they need reminding. Economically though not in hot war.

Economic war yes, hot war no. I'll happily pay more for stuff I don't even need rather than go to war with N. Korea, eventually China will clean up their mess that they created. Or they'll be poor, their choice.

I'm not seeing where Trump mentioned an aircraft carrier going to Korea. All I can find is this:
"We are sending an armada. Very powerful," Trump told Fox. "We have submarines. Very powerful. Far more powerful than the aircraft carrier. That I can tell you."
where he pretty specifically said that the armada was far more powerful than the aircraft carrier.

Just a lot of backpeddaling. donald did not lie... he launched a multi-billion dollar armada to Australia to send North Korea a message.

What message? Hard to say. Either the CiC doesn't know where North Korea is, or he doesn't want his expensive shiny boats anywhere near it.

One of the many strengths of the aircraft carrier is the high speed it can maintain. Except in the case of some rather specialized shapes for watercraft, any sizable water vessel's speed is limited by the length of the hull at the waterline. Aircraft carriers, being so long, have a high top speed (don't ask, can't tell). Factor in the lack of short-term refueling requirements, the ability to carry tons of food and make her own water mean that she can go full speed for much longer than any of her battle-group. This also means that subs can't really track her without making a ton of noise. Any sub would be detected by the leap-frogging defensive screens. It is far more likely that she will be tracked via satellite and electronics emissions than anything a sub is going to do. The subs will already be in the general area where she's going, they'll wait for her to arrive.

Well, if you take him at his word in the armada statement...he mentions submarines, there's really only 1 ship 'far more powerful' than the aircraft carrier, and not anyone in the press or by satellite would have any idea where they are.

Get stuffed. CVN groups do not race across the world at 30+ knots. They are sitting ducks without support, including their own submarines.

This also means that subs can't really track her without making a ton of noise.

Big whoop. So what if they make noise? International waters in peacetime and all.

Very good point. We can sometimes elect people who aren't qualified to lead. We did. Our military is like a fuse that protects us, if the threat grows too large it blows and the elected leadership finds out they aren't really in charge as much as they think they are. Trump is the perfect example, the military is not going to let him actually be in charge. Thankfully.

"The U.S. Naval Institute's Combat Fleets of the World noted that some reports suggest the vessel might have a maximum speed of between 35 and 40 knots. It is far quieter than previous Russian submarines and has a maximum "silent" speed of about 20 knots. Like most new nuclear submarine designs, Severodvinsk reactor is designed to last for the life of the boat."

You really have no idea of how this works, do you?

A CVN group in hostile waters almost always includes a 668 Los Angeles class attack sub, the most silent, most deadly sub in the world.

There is no way any countries subs, especially the diesel subs of the Chinese and Norks, can track a CVN group without the US knowing it and pinging them. Once they are pinged, they leave or die a quiet death.
