'Sopranos' Prequel Movie is in Development

David Chase is finally ready to return to the New Jersey turf of his iconic creation The Sopranos. New Line has purchased the screenplay The Many Saints of Newark, the working title for a feature prequel of The Sopranos that is set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s. That was a time when the African-Americans and the Italians of Newark were at each other's throats, and amongst the gangsters of each group, those conflicts became especially lethal. ... [T]he time period indicates there will be room for Tony Soprano's father, Giovanni "Johnny Boy," the former captain of the Soprano crew (played in flashbacks by Joseph Siravo), and a younger version of his wife Livia (played indelibly in the show's first season by Nancy Marchand), and Tony's uncle Junior, played by Chianese. -- Deadline

i grew up with these guys. i lived in peaceful valley which abutted the north end, the for all times, home of kansas citys italian folks. i went to northeast high school which was about 1/3 italian heritage 1/4 hispanic all the rest were white. no blacks. i graduated in '64. through school and racing connections i came to see the very last of the old time gangster BS go down. goodfellas and casino are more realistic than you may realize. lots of punks and psychos but also the original roma bakery on 5th and jennies mmmmmmmmmmmm

The Greenbush neighborhood here with the Italian Workmen's Club, Fraboni's Deli and Gino's Italian specialties is a little slice of old world Wisconsin. The muffaletta at Fraboni's and Gino's linguini in clam sauce are in a neverending battle for my stomach
