Trump Even Lied About What He Paid For Melania's Ring

When Donald Trump told the The New York Times in 2005 that Graff Diamonds gave him a $1 million discount on Melania Knauss' engagement ring, the future president of the United States was not telling the truth, Forbes has learned.

Graff Diamonds' billionaire chairman Laurence Graff said in a January 26 email sent from his home in Gstaad, Switzerland, that Trump was "a pleasure to do business with" but that he was given "no favours" when he bought the ring, which sports an emerald cut D-flawless diamond weighing more than 10 carats.

"We don't sell items for publicity value," said Graff CFO Nicholas Paine. Publicity value was what Graff was seeking with the purported discount to Trump, wrote the Times, quoting Trump as saying, proudly, "Only a fool would say, 'No thank you, I want to pay a million dollars more for a diamond.'"

The ring retailed for $1.5 million, according to the Times. Graff and Paine declined to specify a price.

A third source, with direct knowledge of the transaction, said Trump lied to the Times. "He paid for [the ring] in full, and he paid immediately," said this person.

Trump also paid in full for a second Graff diamond ring he bought for Melania in celebration of the couple's 10th wedding anniversary.

The First Lady came under fire for posing in her official White House photo wearing the giant rock, reported to weigh 25 carats and cost $3 million.

Neither the White House nor the First Lady's office responded to repeated emails requesting comment.
