Tinhorn Trump Demands Military Parade in DC

President Trump's vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America's armed forces. Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon's tank -- a room reserved for top-secret discussions -- marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning.

More

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France," said a military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the planning discussions are supposed to remain confidential. "This is being worked at the highest levels of the military."

Shows of military strength are not typical in the United States -- and they don't come cheap. The cost of shipping Abrams tanks and high-tech hardware to Washington could run in the millions, and military officials said it was unclear how they would pay for it.

Tanks rolling down Penn Ave, fighter jets above, troops massed to fight... nothing like having a real War President, is there?

It isn't worth looking up the community pages, but each branches' ceremonial drill corps aren't likely to be as large as a country which performs shows annually instead of deploying.

#9 | Posted by GOnoles92 at 2018-02-06 08:32 PM

It's gonna be funny to see such an empty parade.
All it will do is portray weakness.

#10 | Posted by snoofy at 2018-02-06 08:37 PM

I hear they're training the military to march in a new fashion called the goose step.

And they'll wear a sash around their arms with a golden "T" embroidered on it.

The parade will conclude with execution of several illegal immigrants.

#11 | Posted by ClownShack at 2018-02-06 08:59 PM

Now I'm scared. Any Trump supporters want to discount this "wannabe dictator" move?

#14 | Posted by bored at 2018-02-06 09:26 PM

This supposed to counter Psycho Kim's military parades?

There is no way Psycho Trump's parade will be anything close to Psycho Kim's. Psycho Kim demands every soldier and every rocket be available for his parade. Trump won't be able to pull that off, which will make his parade seem as tiny as his own hands.

#15 | Posted by rstybeach11 at 2018-02-06 09:37 PM

the streets need to be filled with people, preventing this parade from happening.

#16 | Posted by YAV at 2018-02-06 10:31 PM

Psycho Kim has such parades Americans do not. Like Yave said, Americans should just fill the streets and make it impossible or better yet, our military should just refuse to participate.

#19 | Posted by PinchALoaf at 2018-02-07 12:45 AM

The military should give Trump their plan, but the plan should be to just park tanks in front of Trump Tower and put up a taco truck.

#20 | Posted by snoofy at 2018-02-07 12:56 AM

Per the article ...

When he traveled to Paris in July, Trump expressed his admiration for the Bastille Day display.

"It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen," Trump gushed to reporters.

"It was two hours on the button, and it was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France."

Instead of a military parade like France, how about a healthcare system like France?

Here's a great headline from a conservative outlet, RedState.com ...

Yes, It Appears Trump Is Planning an Imperial Military Parade (No, Seriously)

www.redstate.com

This is not really something we do in the United States.

I mean, tin pot dictatorships, sure, but we've never had the need for it.

Then again, we've never had such a petty, emotionally stunted little troll as president.

According to the Washington Post, Trump's vision of a military parade through Washington, as a show of our military might, is increasingly likely to become reality.

Trump's admiration for authoritarian strongmen is well known, at this point. He needs to flex that muscle.

In a January 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon's tank (a room reserved for top secret discussions), he broached the subject of a military parade, again.

Of course, there are more practical reasons for avoiding such shows. Not the least of which is the weight of the tanks (70 tons) thundering down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Sure, pay millions to stroke Trump's out of control ego, just in setting up the parade, then how many millions more in repairing the roads after tanks meant for battlefields, not U.S. streets pretty much destroy the roads?

C'mon, Boaz (or any of you Trump supporters)...tell us why this is a good idea.

#25 | Posted by Angrydad at 2018-02-07 05:25 AM

Another example of Trump's small mindedness and insecurity. People confident in their abilities, assets, etc. don't have to brag about it; they exude it. People around them know it. They don't have to proclaim that "I know words", "I went to the best schools", etc.

Trump is such an insecure, petty little man. He's also a lying POS.

I agree. No elephants ~ no parade.

But you also have to consider the cost. A parade bigger than Trump's ego will cost millions of dollars.

Surely, the expense will be offset by cuts. Maybe there's some unnecessary expenses in Well Baby Care that he hasn't tapped yet.

#31 | Posted by Twinpac at 2018-02-07 07:45 AM

You liberals are such idiots. You never have a problem when one of your favored dictators is having a parade (like Venuzuela, perhaps).

Military parades come in good tradition. I see nothing wrong in having one and I would love to see it. It stirs pride for country and country men and women.

Most of you liberals were never in the military or if you were, you soured on it and now you are cynical. I understand that.

But if taxpayer dollars can be wasted on "universal income" and welfare, then a once a year parade would not be that bad.

I will admit, I have reservations about the cost, like any good conservative would. I would rather he do it in conjunction with some other military event, like maybe the 82nd day at FT. Bragg, something that's already planned to lower the cost.

But there is nothing wrong with reminding liberals who actually pays the price for their freedom.

With the United States' recent history of invasions and occupations that last for 15+ years we should not be celebrating our military, we should not be whipping up militaristic thoughts among our people. We should be doing exactly the opposite.

#40 | Posted by danni at 2018-02-07 10:11 AM

BOAZ

Only weenies like Trump feel like they have something to prove. Parading tanks and missiles down Pennsylvania Avenue only feeds his ego because he saw a parade in France and now he wants one, too. He's like a child in a department store screaming at the top of his lungs if he doesn't get everything he want.

I resent using our military to feed that moron's ego.

If Trump wants to show his support for the veterans, he should dig into his petty cash and send a couple million dollars to Wounded Warriors.

A military parade costs millions. Let's fix military housing, hire more VA doctors, fund telehealth, DOD schools, support the commissaries, daycare for families, or give more flight training time. Our highest defense priority must be the service members, not the politicians.

Also, didn't we have a parade of this nature in '91?

As someone that lived in D.C. I can tell you the Marine Barracks parades are wonderful, but they are nothing like what Trump is demanding. That's an awful attempt at equivalence, Boaz.

The Marine Barracks' Parade is in the complex's central grounds (grass). Not the streets of D.C.

He's a showman, so naturally he wants something like this.

He has pretty good instincts when it comes to rural America (which used to be a key Democratic constituency) and this plays well to that crowd. This will most likely be portrayed very poorly by the MSM which will further demonstrate how walled-off they are from rural America. It also puts Democrats in a bind because vocal opposition to this can be spun as anti-military and anti-America.

"It also puts Democrats in a bind because vocal opposition to this can be spun as anti-military and anti-America."

Not if Dems take a page from the Democratic senator from Hawaii I quoted earlier, give the money that would spent on the parade to the military and veterans groups:

Brian Schatz‏ @brianschatz

A military parade costs millions. Let's fix military housing, hire more VA doctors, fund telehealth, DOD schools, support the commissaries, daycare for families, or give more flight training time. Our highest defense priority must be the service members, not the politicians.

‘Tanks, but no tanks': D.C. officials pan Trump's proposed grand military parade

The D.C. Council had a simple message on Twitter for President Trump's proposed grand military parade down Pennsylvania Avenue: "Tanks, but no tanks."

Local officials are panning the prospect of an unprecedented show of military force that would leave the city on the hook for security, clean-up and road repair -- even if the federal government reimburses its costs later.

The early jeers suggestthe tensions ahead if Trump proceeds with an elaborate procession in a city that overwhelmingly voted against him and has emerged as an epicenter of progressive resistance.

"I don't think anyone believes this would be about trying to honor men and women who serve our country," said Council member Charles Allen (D-Ward 6). "This would only be about feeding one man's ego."

If you click on the womens march link this is what you will see:

The Women's March[11][12][13][a] was a worldwide protest on January 21, 2017, to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women's rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, reproductive rights, the natural environment, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, freedom of religion,[17] and workers' rights. Most of the rallies were aimed at Donald Trump, immediately following his inauguration as President of the United States, largely due to statements that he had made and positions that he had taken which were regarded by many as anti-women or otherwise offensive.[11][18] It was the largest single-day protest in U.S. history.[19]

#177 | Posted by danni at 2018-02-08 08:46 AM

People need to understand one thing about parades of military hardware, they are a show of force for domestic consumption, the nations that generally go to great efforts to put on such shows of force need to convince their populations of their ability to oppose any threat to their dictatorships. That is why we don't generally do such things here, we don't live in a dictatorship and we don't want to start emulating them. Not surprising that Orange Hitler would be suggesting such a show of force especially as he threatens war with both Iran and N. Korea. The people could get the idea we can oppose him and his wars, can't have that. Show them the power that he wields and they will be silent.

#178 | Posted by danni at 2018-02-08 08:50 AM

As far as it goes, Trump is the Commander in Chief, and he can tell the uniformed services to put on a parade.(There are over 12,000 working at the Pentagon). That used to be much more common than it is today,JFK had a big one. Martial displays aren't much in vogue or style nowadays.

The only parade we need is the one I just got back from...Go Philly!!!

Trumpkins gets money for all the useless stuff, but cannot get money for healthcare and other basic services. Trumpkin will throw 2 or 3 awards to veterans and tell he cares for veterans, but never fix the vets healthcare...which is more important than this crap.

Of course he can. He can also apparently launch missiles into sovereign nation that is not attacking us while eating his beautiful chocolate cake.

That does not make it right.

Just don't lie and say it is for the troops. It is not.

It is for Trump's YUUUUGE ego and nothing else.

A military parade is probably the most childish of dick-waving that exists.

I hate that we have the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels as it is.

#174 | Posted by SheepleSchism

But hillary would have done the same thing right? Since she was just as bad as trump?

Every country that produces jets has demonstration teams, and the Thunderbirds & Blue Angels don't even scratch the surface of how many we really operate.

Trump should just get himself a pilot suit and codpeice and land on an Aircraft Carrier like Bush did.

He could pretend he is the pilot and make airplane noises.

He could declare that his "mission" has been "accomplished" and all the troops will cheer him.

Because they were ordered to.

#196 | Posted by donnerboy at 2018-02-08 04:34 PM

People like you suck. You literally hate that someone else likes something you dont. So people like you go out and try to find reasons to say everything that everyone else likes is bad.

Trump doesn't understand how things work. He wants to see our military march by and salute HIM to stoke his ego. He doesn't understand that they are not saluting the person but the office he holds and the country he is supposed to be governing. Then again he doesn't understand that governing and ruling are different words with different meanings.

Robert J. O'Neill
@mchooyah

A military parade is third world -------. We prepare. We deter. We fight. Stop this conversation.

Robert J. O'Neill is a politically conservative former Navy SEAL who helped kill Osama bin Laden.

In other words, a real great American

France is a third world --------?

I just don't think it's that bad.

The Navy Seal who shot Bin Laden in the face thinks Trump's parade is dumb.

The U.S. Navy SEAL who killed Usama bin Laden is not a fan of President Trump's call for a military parade in Washington, and he made his opinion clear on the commander-in-chief's favorite social media forum.

"A military parade is third world bulls---," O'Neill tweeted. "We prepare. We deter. We fight. Stop this conversation."

When a user pointed out that France and Russia conduct military parades, O'Neill replied: "Yes. Third World. If Russia or France were powerful enough to take over the world, they would. We are yet we don't. That's called First World."

One thing y'all forget, Washington is probity the worst city on earth for a military parade. No martialing yards for heavy equipment like tanks. Limited access to parade roughs like Pennsylvania Ave. Now the big reason, the last time their was a big parade in Washington,1965, the weight and vibration of the hundred or so armored vehicles caused the hundred year old plus sewers in Washington to collapse. Parades do not teach soldiers to fight. They are a waste of time. We can have pretty soldiers or deadly soldiers, can't have both. Let the "old guard" do their thing. They are the army's pretty soldiers. Funerals, receptions and ceremonies, is what they do well. I guess they are needed, someone needs to guard the tomb of the unknowns.
