Trey Gowdy Joins GOP Stampede Out of Congress

House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) won't run for another term, he announced Wednesday, making him the latest GOP chairman to announce he's heading for the exits in recent months. "I will not be filing for re-election to Congress nor seeking any other political elected office," Gowdy said in a statement. "Instead I will be returning to the justice system. Whatever skills I may have are better utilized in a courtroom than in Congress, and I enjoy our justice system more than our political system." His announcement makes him the ninth Republican committee chairman to announce he's leaving, the second this week alone, and the second Oversight chairman in less than a year, as former Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) quit to take a job at Fox News last year.

Good news: Gowdy out.

Bad news: Speculation on the right that he will replace Sessions as AG.

Something like this is inevitable. Trump is hiding something hugely illegal. The attempts to get Mueller from finding it have only accelerated.

Howdy Gowdy bites the dust... yet another seat for the GOP to defend.

It is no secret that he didn't particularly like being a congressman.

What an act of bipartisanship, for Jim Trafficant to will his mop to another failed congressman: Trey Gowdy.
Mop? Check.
Flop? Check.
A position in Trump's Big Loser Administration surely awaits a man with such a tenuous grasp of reality and lack of respect for truth.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) announced his retirement from Congress shortly after some of his Republican colleagues were in a train wreck involving a garbage truck.

I thought for sure this was an opening to an Onion article.

But wait! How will effective legislation that benefits the American people be enacted without leaders such as Trey Gowdy in Congress?

#15 | Posted by moder8 at 2018-01-31 03:41 PM

I was looking at the front page of the DR and I noticed thread titled "This Is What Losing Looks Like", and it is a thread about our Afghanistan adventure. But, now that I think about it, watching all these Republican rats fleeing Congress, I think that really, this is what losing looks like.

#16 | Posted by moder8 at 2018-01-31 03:43 PM

Did somebody turn a light on in congress?

look at them run!

For some reason the stampede of Repubs leaving makes me uneasy, not happy.

This resulting in a wave of Dem seats is too Hollywood an ending for me and Hollywood endings are rarely reality.

I wonder what they know that we don't and what it might mean for the rest of us that even these soulless hacks don't want it on their conscience or record.

#18 | Posted by jpw at 2018-01-31 03:47 PM

I doubt it's conscience. They're likely not too pleased with Trump bending them over as he pleases.

Think about the leaks we're getting. There has to be 100 times the amount of stuff that's never leaked.

#19 | Posted by BruceBanner at 2018-01-31 03:58 PM

We need to stop slut-shaming Republican members of Congress. It's just not right.

For some reason the stampede of Repubs leaving makes me uneasy, not happy.

Good! Stay suspicious. Stay skeptical. These things are rarely what they seem at first.

So don't let your guard down.

And for God's sake stay fired up!

Follow our wonderful brave women's lead. Protest. Run for office... get involved. Go to town hall meetings. Write or call your representatives and tell them what you want and expect them to do regarding DACA and the CR vote Feb 8th.

As this November gets closer Volunteer. Go door to door. Help with voter registrations. Help folks get to the voting booth come November.

Keep your eye on the prize!

Oh and whatever you do.. Don't believe a damn thing they say any more.

Especially that Humpy Trumpy fellow.

If things are going so great under President Donald, why are nine Republican committee chairmen in Congress quitting? Either things are not so great or he has some savage B.O.

#23 | Posted by rcade at 2018-01-31 04:11 PM

Either things are not so great or he has some savage B.O.

If Trump's rank B.O. was a color, the color would be orange.

Bad news: Speculation on the right that he will replace Sessions as AG.

Couldn't be more wrong:

He's long expressed interest in becoming a federal judge. A seat on the Fourth Circuit Court, which covers South Carolina, became vacant just yesterday, and the current U.S. attorney in South Carolina is serving in an interim role.
It is a safe GOP seat, and Trump will quickly appoint him to that seat.

#33 | Posted by Rightocenter at 2018-01-31 06:35 PM

I'm thinking 4th Circuit too.

#34 | Posted by mOntecOre at 2018-01-31 06:52 PM

The timing is what is key, if that seat doesn't open up, Gowdy keeps his job in the House.

#35 | Posted by Rightocenter at 2018-01-31 07:08 PM

Man...

Blast from the past:

www.washingtonpost.com

FTA:

House Republicans are already preparing for ‘years' of investigations of Clinton

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah -- Jason Chaffetz, the Utah congressman wrapping up his first term atop the powerful House Oversight Committee, unendorsed Donald Trump weeks ago. That freed him up to prepare for something else: spending years, come January, probing the record of a President Hillary Clinton.

"It's a target-rich environment," the Republican said in an interview in Salt Lake City's suburbs. "Even before we get to Day One, we've got two years' worth of material already lined up. She has four years of history at the State Department, and it ain't good."

In a tweet Wednesday night, Chaffetz reaffirmed his distaste for Clinton and his refusal to endorse Trump -- but reversed his plans not to vote for the Republican nominee.

Now they are all quitting.

Bummer.

The only way this South Carolina seat ends up Democrat is in an alternative universe. If some Democrats continue with their current level of overconfidence, November is going to be a very sad month.
