Trump Monetizes State of the Union

President Donald Trump aims to use his State of the Union address Tuesday night to boost funding for his 2020 re-election campaign, promising to display the names of campaign donors during a live broadcast of the speech. In a fundraising push, Trump on Monday afternoon sent a text message to supporters with an offer to flash their names across the screen during the Donald J. Trump for President Livestream of the event. "The State of the Union speech is not about me. It's about YOU. Which is why I will have the names of every supporter who contributes today broadcast during my speech on the Official DJT for President Livestream!" it said. "Enough of the Fake News Media. It's time for them to hear from the AMERICAN PEOPLE."

Your Name Displayed during the State of the Union

This is a movement. It's not about just one of us. It's about ALL of us. Which is why your name deserves to be displayed during Tuesday night's speech.

Please make a special State of the Union contribution to have your name broadcast on the Official Donald J. Trump for President livestream.

Trump campaign: Send us $35 and we'll scroll your name during State of the Union live stream

The fundraising technique is raising eyebrows from ethics watchdogs, who say the unprecedented attempt to raise money off an official White House event crosses a line.

"Donald Trump is commercializing and corrupting yet another national institution, making this just the latest disgraceful degradation by Trump of the presidency and our public institutions," said Robert Weissman, president, Public Citizen.

"I have never heard of anything like this," said Fred Wertheimer, president of the organization Democracy 21. "It is a no class, money-grubbing misuse of the State of the Union address that is way beneath the dignity of the presidency and the occasion."

In a solicitation, the Trump campaign asks supporters to "make a special State of the Union contribution to have your name broadcast on the Official Donald J. Trump for President livestream."

Suggested contributions range from $35 to $2,700.

As much as some people spend their day around here defending what Trump does, he is entirely indefensible.

If Obama had done this the reaction from Republicans and Fox News would have been volcanic. It's amazing how much the right accepts from Trump. They have dropped every single rule they ever put forward that applied to the dignity of the presidency.

We need to replace this pageant bs with something akin to Prime Ministers questions. Trump aside, the presidency and all of government needs to be reduced from exhaltation to a role of service. Having to stand before the mast while other representatives get to take you to task in front of the nation would be a good symbolic change. We don't need people who want to be special running our government. We need people who want to find what is special in everyone else and help them actualize it.

The NFL is wounded animal already mostly because the games are slow and shit, defenses suck without practicing tackling and the concussion thing. Fantasy football created a bubble that wasn't there otherwise (inviting everyone to participate in the gambling that was really the o Lu remaining draw to the sport.) Trump "taking down" the NFL is the rooster taking credit for the dawn.

It was supposed to be a play on words.

First, he's white. And I could see the Dems stooping to some shallow ploy of thinking a white Obama would magically get him elected.

In other words, the American president is functionally all-powerful, and whenever he can't get something done, it's because he's not trying hard enough, or not trying smart enough."

"The State of the Union Is Unrecognizable

A long, surprisingly standard speech ignored the tumultuous lived reality of American politics over the past year -- and the likely reality in the year to come.

The strangest thing about watching President Donald Trump deliver a State of the Union address was how normal it seemed.

Tuesday night, in his first State of the Union, the president offered a workmanlike speech that seemed worlds away from the tumultuous, gridlocked lived reality of American politics over the last year -- or the likely reality in the year to come.

Looking back to his speech to a joint session of Congress last February, Trump recalled, "A new tide of optimism was already sweeping across our land. Each day since, we have gone forward with a clear vision and a righteous mission -- to make America great again for all Americans," he added. "Over the last year, we have made incredible progress and achieved extraordinary success."

The reality is somewhat less rosy: By a wide margin, Americans believe the nation is on the wrong track, and the president's approval rating is historically low.

Trump has struggled to push his agenda through Congress, just squeaking a big tax cut in at the end of last year.

That presents three challenges for the president, and his speechwriters: How do you boast about victories you haven't had? How do you present new proposals when many of the old ones are still on the table?

And how do you handle the Russia story that seems to consume most of politics each week?"

We, meaning not just democrats but any intelligent, informed and decent person, weren't the intended audiences.

This was merely spoon feeding the deplorables what the GOP wants them to think for the next year. Over the next year expect new list of Trump's "accomplishments" (think-MOAB for Isis kind of "accomplishments) will circulate to keep them placated, Trump will continue to rail everyone and will continue to destroy the very thing he professed to love all night. And if he survives until next year's State of the Union he'll give another unremarkable speech meant only for the mouthbreathers in his base denying two years of evidence of his incompetence, immorality and lack of mental acuity.

His tag-line sounded better when Hillary said it...twice

www.google.com

And before anyone offers a monkey banging on a typewriter at random excuse for him plagiarizing his arch rival, this wasn't just a phrase in the speech. It was a tag line highlighted for reporters in the advance press materials for speech coverage. Because of the late hour that SOTU is given, major newspapers have to go to press often before the speech is delivered. The white house gives the press materials regarding the speech to prepare their stories for the next day. This phrase was apparently a highlighted point in that kit.

Either trumps speech writers are trolling him or this wentire administration is as lazy, stupid and dishonest as their master. (Hint: it's the latter)
